Interesting life, on excellent sources, no copyvio obvious. Nice to meet you, Fish and karate! I am interested in opera and never heard her name, so struck the original hook. It says actually nothing specific about why (not even conducting), which is boring. After reading, I understood that she is probably notable especially as a teacher, which is not yet in the lead. Please get the details about where she died and of what, to the body, - that's no lead material. Compare a recent article on a 21th-century opera woman. What I miss in the article are details about performances and reviews, but I understand that they are hard to get for that period. - Hook: can we say "female conductor" instead of the unusual term needing a link, - don't expect the avarage reader to even know maestro? Please word something without "prominent", that's expected in a DYK. Rather mention Iris in New York, which gives a more precise idea of why "prominent" or rather "notable".
The image is wonderful and speaks volumes, and is licensed! Only: please don't be disappointent if it's not shown, because the article is rather short. Therefore again: word a hook as ALT2 (below) as if the reader would see no image.
This is your fifth nomination, right? Then you don't need to review. If you want to anyway, there's this opera woman mentioned above ;) - I did some copy-editing for Fiora, revert if you don't like. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:57, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
Hi Gerda. I don't know anything, at all, about opera; what would and would be of interest or particular notability, how to lay my hands on reviews, etc. I put the article together mostly from obituaries, after her son requested an article about her. I don't even know what Iris in New York is... I did ask Wikiproject Opera for some help, and someone expanded a bit. Is it my fifth nomination? How did you tell? I haven't nominated an article for DYK since 2008 (I had to look it up). fish&karate 12:43, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
Thank you, understand, and project opera might be helpful in expanding. Mascagni's opera Iris, conducted at Alice Tully Hall, is in the article ;) - that's a notable piece at a notable venue. I found the older credits in your archives (easy: put "Did you know" in the search function), but possibly the counting should not begin until after the rule ("qpq", that one has to review an article for every one one nominates, after no. 5). Anyway, that sentence was for those who review reviewing, not for you. (It happened that I forgot to check that a qpq was done.) Another rule says that I cannot approve my own hook, that's why are asked you to word ALT2. But as it's just a rewording of ALT1, I dare to do it:
ALT2:... that Fiora Contino conducted operas, specialising in Italian verismo?
Please use it as a model for ALT3, giving a time and/or the piece. Or something else. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:55, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
Here's something I found, please add if you like. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:19, 6 December 2017 (UTC)

I've shamelessly borrowed the suggested hook. Consider it my own if you like now. I also tried a third and fourth one (ALT3 / ALT4). I will try and include those two links in the article, thank you for providing those. NB - for ALT4, I can tell she was 73 as she was born in June 1925 and the performance of Iris was in November 1998 (according to the performance list at Teatro Grattacielo). fish&karate 14:05, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
I moved them down here (If only for me to see them when commenting):
ALT3:... that Fiora Contino conducted Iris at Alice Tully Hall?
ALT4:... that Fiora Contino made her New York conducting debut at the age of 73, conducting the Teatro Grattacielo at Alice Tully Hall?
By time, I didn't mean her age (would be more hooky if 23), rather when (how early) she did it. Unless you come up with something more exciting:
ALT5:... that Fiora Contino (pictured) conducted Pietro Mascagni's opera Iris at New York's Alice Tully Hall?
--Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:41, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
There, I've used those two helpful links. Thank you! fish&karate 14:37, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
I'd be happy with any of those hooks. fish&karate 15:49, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
  • The image is very good for the image slot, but the hooks are all very bland. Only ALT4 excites me a little. What do you think about:
  • ALT6: ... that a New York Times reviewer opined that Fiora Contino (pictured), an important figure in opera in the 20th century, "might have had a far bigger career had she been a man"? Yoninah (talk) 21:18, 9 December 2017 (UTC)
... only that you could say the same thing about any woman in that profession at that time. I'd go with Alfano in her bloostream, if Verismo isn't exciting enough, saying at least a bit about what kind of music she conducted, while ALT6 doesn't even hint at opera. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:54, 10 December 2017 (UTC)
ALT7: ... that Peter G. Davis wrote after a performance of Risurrezione that Fiora Contino (pictured) "may be the last conductor on earth with the music of Alfano and his generation in her bloodstream"? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:08, 10 December 2017 (UTC)
  • Thank you, that's a lot better. ALT7 hook ref verified and cited inline. I added a link to Alfano. Rest of review per Gerda Arendt. ALT7 good to go. Yoninah (talk) 14:38, 10 December 2017 (UTC)
That’s fine by me. fish&karate 15:03, 10 December 2017 (UTC)
