Carolyn Sampson[edit]

  • Reviewed: Tangendorf disk brooch
  • Comment: related to (expanded, but not 5*) Bach cantata for 15th Sunday after Trinity, 16 September, premiered 17 September

  • The hook seems overloaded, and the sentence structure has ended up a bit complex as a result.
The fact that she also recorded a popular piece would be better omitted, as in ALT1 below. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 17:27, 12 September 2012 (UTC)
  • ALT1 ... that Carolyn Sampson was the first soprano to record all of Bach's aria BWV 1127, which had been lost until 2005?
I see your point but the only reason to create "her" was to mention the expanded cantata, as mentioned above ;) Also: mentioning just one light-weight aria seems to be to small a thing for this exquisite singer, who - singing the cantata - follows Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and many many others, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:44, 12 September 2012 (UTC)
I understand what you were trying to do, but the recommendation is please make it "hooky", that is, short, punchy, catchy, and likely to draw the readers in to wanting to read the article. An interesting hook is more likely to draw in a variety of readers. Shorter hooks are preferred to longer ones, as long as they don't misstate the article content.
A hook which "singer records frequently-recorded song" doesn't seem very catchy, but a first recording is catchy ... and including both facts degrades the hook by adding length and making it less punchy. If you've got a hooky hook that draws the reader into the article, they'll see the link to the cantata. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 18:20, 12 September 2012 (UTC)
  • Thanks for telling me. My experience is that the links on the Main page get clicked, not those in the article. Learning from your wording:
ALT2: ... that Carolyn Sampson was the first soprano to record all of Bach's aria BWV 1127, lost until 2005, along with his solo cantata Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen, BWV 51? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:39, 12 September 2012 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Comment: I agree that the ALT1 hook is superior: someone who was the first to completely record a Bach aria stands out. When Jauchzet gets added on, it detracts from the punchiness. Your standard reader isn't going to know about the relative weight of the pieces; the fact that a new Bach aria was first recorded in toto in 2005 is key. (adding:) So, having seen a new ALT2 with Jauchzet again, I urge that ALT1 be used rather than ALT2 or the original hook. BlueMoonset (talk) 21:02, 12 September 2012 (UTC)
New day: I thought about it. - Do you really think, someone who clicked the soprano because she did a first (complete, not in time,) recording would regret having done so, reading a bit more about what she did? - If we take ALT1, I will want to remember in the years to come to check if 17 Sep - day of first performance of BWV 51 - is close to the 15th Sunday after Trinity, - it is nicely close this year. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:53, 13 September 2012 (UTC)

  • striking hooks with the cantata, that was last Sunday, I hope I will remember one of the next years, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:25, 22 September 2012 (UTC)
