Split article[edit]
I recommend that the list of people with the surname Wright be split into its own standalone article. Further, the new list article should have an Edit Page Notice which requires each name in the list to have a Wikipedia article. The main "Wright" article can then be hatnoted to inform readers of the list. If no one objects, I will shortly request administrator assistance for the split with proper handling of History and creation of the Edit Page Notice. DonFB (talk) 03:38, 21 March 2017 (UTC)
- What names do you suggest for the list of people? Should the name of this article remain unchanged? Note that Wright (surname) and a bewildering number of REDIRECTs along the line of List of people with the surname Wright exist; see WhatLinksHere/Wright. - I am guided by Smith (surname), which has a hatnote directing readers to the list of names. My reason is to be able to show editors an Edit Notice, explicitly for the "List of people with surname Wright" article, telling them that entries must already have an article (ie, must be notable), to discourage frivolous/vandalous entries, and to provide a ready-made justification to remove unsuitable entries. I added a commented-out notice on the Wright edit page, but it's only visible in one place and would not be seen if an editor clicks directly on a letter section. (The Smith list does not have such an Edit Notice, but presumably could benefit from one.) DonFB (talk) 05:25, 21 March 2017 (UTC)
- The text of Smith (surname) is much longer than the lead in this article, so splitting that article seems sensible. I don't see any benefit in splitting this much shorter article/list. As for edit notices: I don't think they will deter typical vanity entries. On the other hand, I will not man the barricades against whatever you propose, although some input from WP:WikiProject Anthroponymy might be helpful. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 11:22, 21 March 2017 (UTC)

- I don't see the point of splitting: neither the text nor the list are particularly long. If an editnotice is needed, can't it be added to the article as it stands now? – Uanfala (talk) 14:56, 21 March 2017 (UTC)
- Edit notice could be added to the current article, but seems more appropriate for a pure List article, rather than a narrative article with embedded list. To me, this embedded list appears moderately long. I'd like to see a version of {{Editnotice for lists of people}} that requires an article (rather than a RS) for entries in a separate Wright list (wouldn't hurt for the Smith, Johnson, Brown & perhaps other name lists also.) Introduction of Labeled Section Transclusion technology[edit]
Hello - in order to make this list more manageable and complete, I've started introducing code related to Help:LST, as discussed in general at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Disambiguation pages#How to list entries at "surname" page when also have "hndis"? (Old revision of the talk page). This requires 'incoming' pages to also be properly coded and formatted, and I am still in the process of doing those revisions. This method tremendously reduces the effort required to maintain a common surname page like this one. --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 00:51, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
Not what "literal" means[edit]
"In Ireland, the native Gaelic Mac an Cheairt sept of County Mayo occasionally changed their name to Wright. This is a literal translation meaning, "son of the right or righteous""
How is "Wright" a literal translation of a name which literally means "son of the right or righteous"? I can only imagine that sentence was written by somebody who doesn't know the meaning of the word literal. What's more, if you follow the source link, the article it links to doesn't say that the Mac an Cheairts changed their name to Wright, but the other way round - that their name is "evidently" a mistranslation of Wright.
