Wellington Avenue[edit]

"Not enough funds" for a railway crossing according to whom? Common sense suggests that Wellington doesn't connect to the airport since it is a local collector that ends before it reaches downtown. The railway crossing item seems highly speculative.

Agreed. This appears to be completely baseless. At the very least some citation should be given in support of this contention. I do not think it is unreasonable to give this a yank. --207.218.136.213 03:15, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

New airport name - new article title?[edit]

Well, looks like this airport has been renamed from "Winnipeg International Airport" to "Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport", it seems reasonable that we should change the name of the article to reflect that. Does anyone have any objections? --Fudoreaper 15:15, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move[edit]

Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International AirportWinnipeg International Airport — I didn't see this move initially. However, this is clearly not even close to the common name. OK, I've never been to Winnipeg, but does anyone actually say "Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport"? WP:NAME is pretty clear on using common names in article titles. The full, official name of the airport should just be listed in the infobox and possibly in the article text. DB (talk) 16:14, 10 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Survey - in support of the move[edit]

Take a look at CYYZ's page: Toronto Pearson International. The real name for the Airport is Toronto Lester B. Pearson International. Yet it has been shortened to the 'common' name. Cmdrnmartin 21:04, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not quite. If you look at Toronto Pearson International Airport#History or the GTAA official site you will see that the offical name is "Toronto Pearson International Airport" and the other official name is Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International Airport. Also according to the article a common name would be "Toronto Pearson Airport", "Pearson Airport" or "Lester B. Pearson International Airport". CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 04:39, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Survey - in opposition to the move[edit]

  1. Oppose as per the usual argument. Do people really call it "Winnipeg International Airport", "Winnipeg Aiport", "Winnipeg International" or "the international". No evidence to the common name so use official as given by operating authority. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 00:40, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  2. Oppose Since the official airport name is already changed and will be the name in the foreseeable future, I see no reason to come up with some concoction of a "familiar name" or nickname. BTW, I work at the airport and it won't matter what people call it, it is now the "Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport."Bzuk 23:40, 11 February 2007 (UTC).[reply]
But it matters in Wikipedia, according to the official policy. DB (talk) 04:08, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
And what name will you make up? There is no "common name" for the airport. Bzuk 04:10, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
So no one ever talks about the airport? The common name is what people normally call it. I Don't plan to "make up" a name. DB (talk) 05:28, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Since you wouldn't know, this has been an ongoing topic of conversation in our local newspapers shortly after the naming ceremony at the airport. There is no consensus on a "common name." Bzuk 05:30, 12 February 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Renaming[edit]

I live in Winnipeg. When I go to pick some one up from the airport, I simply say "I'm going to the airport". James Armstrong, or International, or any other name just doesn't roll off the tongue. Toronto's "Pearson" actually means something. Montreal's "Trudeau" means something. "Richardson" means nothing, at least to me. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by RadiantRay (talkcontribs) 02:29, 18 February 2007 (UTC).[reply]

It's a new name. I'm still used to "Winnipeg International Airport" as the new name, but it is no longer correct, and no longer used at the airport, on the radio and in the newspapers.
But shouldn't the article be at Richardson International Airport, per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (common names)? I have never heard the full name used. Michael Z. 2007-03-08 00:55 Z
In all the papers I've read, it is referenced as Richardson International (Formerly Winnipeg Intl) 142.161.27.155 01:47, 7 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I work in the Winnipeg airport complex and there is no consensus on the new name which is the exact reason why this article should stay as is, in terms of the name, even though it is a cumbersome, formal name. When the new terminal is completed in 2009, a familiar name will emerge; my bet is on the "Richardson International" but that determination is still some time to come. Northwest to Detroit ?[edit]

Sure, you can fly YWG to DTW, but only if you fly to MSP first. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by RadiantRay (talkcontribs) 20:20, 28 February 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Accidents and Incidents[edit]

Is it really necessary to indicate that the unruly passenger was Irish? rb26dett um yes it is, this is winnipeg we must know everything! winnipeg for life! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Random05 (talkcontribs) 22:03, 3 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I see no reason to mention the nationality of the passenger. I will remove it. E James (talk) 21:08, 20 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Airport redevelopment[edit]

Is the part referring the new airport opening up YWG to 747/777 reference for the terminal being able to handle them? Winnipeg can definately land them and take them off, as we have had 747s and 777s divert to winnipeg. I am not sure however if gates can handle them or not. 207.161.3.167 04:32, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Link reference #12 under airport development was pointing to www.winnipeginlandport.ca which is not an authoritative source for Centre Port according to the government of Manitoba [[1]]. The correct link is [[2]]Bludder204 (talk) 21:17, 23 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Delta Airlines[edit]

I was told that DELTA was ending service between SLC and YWG as of september 1? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Random05 (talkcontribs) 22:53, 3 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Closure of Runway 07/25?[edit]

Runway 07/25 is still open. The runway won't be closed until the new terminal building is complete. At that point the runway is slated to be converted into a taxiway.

The most recent NOTAM does not mention any runway closures.

Adam 02:53, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The reason that you won't see a NOTAM is because the runway was closed over a year ago and removed from the Canada Flight Supplement, so no NOTAM required. However, that doesn't mean that aircraft are not using it. Depending on weather/runway conditions we sometimes have STOL aircraft, like Twin Otters, landing on the taxiway as it's 90 degrees to the runway. Also, if you look at a sat image it shows 5 X'x starting from the 25 end, indicating that the runway is closed. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 17:26, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Air Transat[edit]

Air Transat no longer flies to Winnipeg per their website [1](http://www.airtransat.ca/en/Destinations/Map.aspx). Have removed this carrier from the list.142.221.110.4 (talk) 17:49, 11 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Doesn't say that. Winnipeg is still on the list, I guess you didn't realize that. Njaohnt (talk) 00:46, 11 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Canadian North/Celebrity Cruises charters[edit]

I removed Canadian North from the Airlines and Destinations section. Celebrity cruises will be offering all-inclusive vacation packages using chartered aircraft departing and arriving at YWG on a charter basis, in this case they have contracted Canadian North to operate the flights. These flights are not regularly scheduled flight operations, and Winnipeg is not listed as a destination in the Canadian North flight schedules. Although Canadian North does offer codeshare service operated by Calm Air and First Air, it does not maintain it's own operations on a regularly scheduled basis at YWG. For reference, you can see the Canadian North flight schedule here : http://www.canadiannorth.com/sites/default/files/Canadian-North-Schedule-November-13-2015.pdf JPark99 (talk) 22:34, 15 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Transition from old airport to new.[edit]

The article simply says the airport operates as such. There is nothing about relocating from the old airport to the new airport and/or what happened to it, it just magically transitions to the new airport from the old without stating it.

There's no new "airport" - they built a new terminal building, but all the runways are the same, modulo routine maintenance. --Wtshymanski (talk) 04:18, 4 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
