IPA[edit]

Remove the tag?[edit]

I did some work to improve this article; can we remove the Wikify tag? Granted, the article does still need work. ProfessorPaul 22:28, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the wikify tag - article is sectioned, has wikilinks, etc. Replaced it with a cleanup tag. JubalHarshaw 17:41, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Chauvinism[edit]

Removed a sentence about Maria Mitchell that was out of place, "Maria Mitchell, a visiting American astronomer, was "riled" by Whewell's chauvinist teasing while dining at Trinity College high table (www.theguardian.com/science/2010/nov/21/royal-society-lost-women-scientists)." I'm sure Whewell was being chauvinist, but without other examples this addition is simply inappropriate. Larsobrien 21:48, 16 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Dates Appear Wrong[edit]

Under "Life and Career" the article states, "In 1814 he was awarded the Chancellor's Gold Medal for poetry.[7] He was Second Wrangler in 1816..."

I don't know which date is wrong, but there has to be an error here, as these were both awards for students graduating with a bachelor of arts degree. In fact you were not allowed to compete for the Chancellor's Gold Medal unless you achieved a rank of senior optime or higher on the Tripos exam (which is how the Wranglers were determined). So it would have been impossible for him to win the Chancellor's Gold Medal before being named a wrangler. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.206.119.25 (talk) 14:00, 28 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Why use the unusual infobox[edit]

This article uses Info box officeholder template, while the article on his predecessor as master of Trinity college Christopher Wordsworth (divine) uses the more common info box person template. Infobox person seems easier to use, and include personal information like his marriages, as well as his many professional accomplishments. Just a thought. I broke up the section on his life into several sections that I encounter more often in a biographical article. I kept text in chronological order, and used cite format for 3 references. - - Prairieplant (talk) 07:16, 21 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
