How much history?[edit]

@Alakazam: Do you have a particular reason for adding the New Orleans history to the Wichita Wind Surge article? I think it's more common not to do that, as with the Potomac Nationals and Fredericksburg Nationals for instance. -- Pemilligan (talk) 21:38, 14 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with Pemilligan. Most recent relocations tend to disregard history in other cities, though mentions in the prose are appropriate. NatureBoyMD (talk) 22:02, 14 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Pemilligan: I'll have you know that I live with the Erie SeaWolves, who were previously the Welland Pirates. On a professional level, the Athletics, Yankees, Orioles, Twins, Rangers, Brewers, Braves, National, Dodgers and Giants (a full third of MLB teams, mind you) were all in previous cities before eventually settling in their present locations. Not only that, various teams from other sports have also moved to other cities. So, do we just ignore all of their wins and losses from their previous locations? I think not. Their past histories must be preserved. While the Wind Surge are freely allowed to keep track of the number of wins and losses that're exclusive to them, it would be a shame to ignore their past time within the Bayou before their 2020s relocation. After all, they were affiliated with different teams prior to the Marlins. In the end, let us not ignore history and thus be doomed to repeat it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alakazam (talkcontribs) 00:34, 15 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Alakazam: Just about every current minor league team has relocated from another city. There are very few charter or expansion teams left in their original city. Can you imagine how messy some infoboxes would be if we showed franchise histories across the past century covering multiple cities, leagues, classifications, and nicknames? Unlike in MLB where current teams honor their franchise history with throwback uniforms (sometimes to other cities), retired numbers, etc., minor league teams rarely (if ever) recognize any history from a previous city. No one is "ignoring" any wins or losses—New Orleans' records have nothing to do with the new team in Wichita. We're not going to be "doomed to repeat" anything here. (For what it's worth, the Baby Cakes (Zephyrs) originated in Denver and came to Denver by way of Kansas City. Now, those three cities and their teams have nothing to do with the Wind Surge.) The best course seems to be having the infobox cover this team from 2020 on and putting together a well-written paragraph with an account of how the team got to Wichita and where it had been. As @Pemilligan pointed out, that is how we've handled other recent relocations. NatureBoyMD (talk) 14:49, 16 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Alakazam: Thank you for mentioning the Erie SeaWolves and the Welland Pirates, a good example of what I'm proposing, where Welland is not included in the Erie Infobox. No one is proposing to ignore history. In this case, it is preserved in the New Orleans Baby Cakes article and its Infobox. -- Pemilligan (talk) 15:32, 16 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
