Based on...?[edit]

The article states the film was based on the Gove land rights case. However, it actually sounds remarkably similar to a dispute over the Nabarlek Uranium Mine which featured the green ant dreaming. Would be good if this could be confirmed. Ivar the Boneful (talk) 15:15, 22 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ivar the Boneful/ I think you've hit upon something there, as according to this article, "Where the Green Ants Dream is a light gloss on a case in which a mining company in Eastern Arnhemland threatened to destroy the ritual sites of the Gunwinggu group" (aka Kunwinjku), and this parliamentary report (see Table 1) does say that the traditional owners are the Gunwinggu. A comment at the bottom of this article (not as an RS, but FYI) says "its underlying themes regarding land title and ownership were reasonably accurate when it was filmed. They're based in part on the Milirrpum v Nabalco Pty Ltd (1971)...". So the wording should be changed to reflect storyline vs underlying premise, perhaps? Also, this leads on to more - as always - we should probably have a bit about the green ant dreaming in the green ant article, and the name of the people (Gunwinggu) could be added to the Nabarlek article, so it all ties up.
