Station name[edit]

Is there some explanation for the unusual form of the station name, as Wellington (Shropshire) [or Wellington (Salop) as I've seen printed on some tickets], when as far as I know there is no other station in the UK also called Wellington? Perhaps historical? DWaterson 00:14, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There are other stations in the world called Wellington railway station. See the disambig link provided. This is also a standard way to distinguish stations and i am unsure about Salop. Simply south 11:36, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ah no, that's not quite what I mean. "Wellington (Shropshire)" is the official name of the railway station, rather than just a Wikipedia disambiguator (otherwise the page would be at Wellington railway station, United Kingdom). I was more curious about the unusual form of the official name of the station rather than its application on Wikipedia. Cheers, DWaterson 11:52, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This station is officially named Wellington (Shropshire) as there is another town of the same name in Somerset I am not sure if there is a station in that one, it is possible that they simply added the extra bit to the name to prevent confusion with the other town resulting in the unwary getting travel information to completely the wrong place not realizing there is another place of the same name MttJocy (talk) 13:05, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Also, Salop is simply an archaic name for both the county-town and the county of Shropshire. Some British institutions have continued to use 'Salop' well beyond it's official use as terminology regarding the county, or indeed, the town of Shrewsbury —Preceding unsigned comment added by 150.237.47.51 (talk) 00:01, 21 January 2009 (UTC) <150.237.47.51 (talk) 00:04, 21 January 2009 (UTC)alex150.237.47.51 (talk) 00:04, 21 January 2009 (UTC)>[reply]

I added a photograph of the station I took today, hope you guys like it, although if not feel free to let me know why and I can go and look at taking another (It is only like 5 minutes walk from the house anyway). MttJocy (talk) 13:05, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It loks a fine starter. Simply south (talk) 20:19, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It says 'eastbound', but Shrewsbury is in a westerly direction, hence it should surely be 'westbound'? (Wolverhampton and Birmingham, for example, are Easterly, and as such are Eastbound directions. If the camera were to continue down the line in the direction in which the photograph was taken, it would, indeed, arrive at Shrewsbury station, hence the picture is taken facing westbound —Preceding unsigned comment added by 150.237.47.51 (talk) 23:59, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
