Advertising on Wikipedia[edit]

Unfortunately User:Valaistourisme has decided to ignore the advice at User talk:Valaistourisme, and for the third time deleted large parts of the article without explanation, overwriting it with unsourced, advertising-like material. Once again: Wikipedia is not a free advertising space, but a project to write an encyclopedia, where a sober, factual writing style is highly valued and opinionated texts (a striking panorama of magnificent peaks) are not appropriate - see our neutral point of view policy.

Because the purpose of an encyclopedia article is to inform neutrally, statements addressing the reader as a potential customer, buyer or paying visitor are inappropriate:

The Romans were already familiar with the therapeutic benefits of thermal baths. You can reap the same benefits today in the Valais’ spa resorts ...

Yes, it apparently turns out that they didn't listen to the NPOV policy before and are continuing not to. User talk:Valaistourisme
I tried a lot to fix the issue, adding templates, creating a talk section (Talk:Valais#Not meeting the standards of a Wikipedia article), attempting to edit some of the text to make it more neutral, and even calling in the experts at Wikipedia:WikiProject Switzerland. Ok, let me explain you the situation once again. Valais Tourism is the umbrella association of tourism in Valais. We are not trying to introduce advertising in Wikipedia, we just want to provide general informations about the region. The main page has been created by the Valais government administration, we can't change it, we only contribute to the "tourism" part because we are specialists of the domain. So, if there is any other problem, let me know and I will change it. What did I delete ? If I delete something in the "tourism" part of the article, it's because this information is wrong of useless.

what happened the pictures?[edit]

French speaking Savoyard[edit]

Starting in 1384 the Morge stream (a little below Sion) was recognized as the boundary between Savoyard, French speaking Lower Valais...

I doubt that in 1384 Savoyards were French speaking people. French became the official language of Savoy under French occupation in the XVI century. French became the official language of Geneva after the reformation. The Francoprovencal language was abandoned in the XIX and XX centuries. The native American/Inca analogy is a false analogy. The language divisions in the Valais developed over centuries of gradual migrations and trade from neighboring peoples, not a sudden invasion from half-way around the world. Perhaps it should be called Franco-Provençal or Savoyard, but the lower Valais spoke a Romance language, while the migrating Walsers spoke Walser German when they settled in the upper Valais.Tobyc75 (talk) 12:50, 19 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Valais Tourism is the umbrella association of tourism in Valais. The Wiki has been created by the Valais government administration, we just created the "tourism" section. Hello,

I encountered a lot of difficulties editing the page called "Valais" in Wikipedia. I've done it in french, no problem, in italian, no problem, but the english version is "impossible" to edit. I already know that every Wikipedia's language section has his own rules in terms of editing, so I think that's the reason why. So my request is simple, I just want to know what I must do to be allowed to edit this section ? Is it a sources problem, a username problem, a copyright problem...etc. ? I don't know and I don't want to edit 10x the same content for nothing, so please help me. I'll look forward for your answer. Thanks million.

What are the Upperwallis and Underwallis headtowns?[edit]

They don't. The districts have capitals and they are listed. The division into Upper and Lower Valais is mostly historical/cultural and doesn't have legal implications. Generally speaking, Upper Valais is the German speaking part and Lower Valais is the French speaking part. I'm very surprised to see Sion and Sierre listed as being part of Upper Valais, they should be in Lower Valais. Also, often the division is not in two, but three regions: Upper, Central and Lower Valais. --Novarupta (talk) 12:21, 15 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

People from Valais are called Valaisan in French and Walliser in German. Sion was, as far as I know, mostly German (and Latin) speaking at some point in medieval history, but certainly not "until lately". "Valais/the Valais"?[edit]

As far as I'm aware, the canton is normally referred to in English simply as "Valais", without a definite article, and this is done several times here. But "the Valais" - which as far as I can see is an over-literal translation from French "le Valais" and German "das Wallis" - is also used several times. Not meeting the standards of a Wikipedia article[edit]

Initially reading this article out of curiosity regarding Swiss cantons, I've encountered a great deal of problems with this article including redundant information, expression of opinions, facts without references, advertising, and even potential conflict of interest. I've already put up maintenance templates on the page. I believe that a complete rewrite of the article is necessary. Ztimes3 (talk) 06:42, 17 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You'll encounter a fair amount of unencyclopedic writing in this and many other articles. I run across it in a lot of articles on European topics especially -- lots of travel-writing style, often effusive and promotional in tone.
