A question on dates[edit]

  • @MisterCake: The association probably existed as an unincorporated organization (i.e., it had no legal existence as a corporation, partnership or other form of business entity) from the earliest days of the University of the State of Florida, effectively existing as a club or department of the university (unclear). In fact, if I remember correctly, I found references to the "athletic association" which predated the formation of the modern university in 1905. That said the association was first incorporated using the old circuit court process in 1929; here is a PDF copy of the Amended and Restated Articles of Incorporation, as filed in 1998, from the Florida Division of Corporations website: [1]. Please note that the first, second and third unnumbered recital paragraphs at the beginning of the restated articles recite the history of the University Athletic Association, Inc. from its incorporation in 1929. I trusted such a specific date was official and with good reason. However, like you I have seen many references of an athletic association doing thus-and-so in the 1910s and 1920s. Hope the official date does not mean anything before '29 is lost to history; and that there is a history of the institution as a legal fiction or not. A lot of great names on that 1911 AA. Cake, I see no contradiction: we can discuss the activities of "the association" before 1929 based on yearbook and newspaper accounts, while acknowledging that the legal existence of "The University Athletic Association, Inc." as a corporation began in 1929. That's reality. Frankly, I had forgotten that the impetus for incorporation was Tigert's fundraising for what became Florida Field until I just re-read the article. That 1904 team getting the first chance to have its tail kicked against real competition is attributed by McEwen to the reorganization of the athletic association in that year. Not surprising. There was a house-cleaning in 1904; the university president and half of the dozen or so faculty members were replaced. I'm sure that had an impact on secondary university organizations too. My impression is that the original athletic association was a pretty loosely-run affair, with the students mostly running the show. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 15:50, 26 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Probably so. If the UF AA is anything like the history of Vanderbilt's, then, if nothing else, it will provide insight into the sports popular back then. Recent history[edit]

Suggest edit to reflect the general declined program since Scott Stricklin became AD. Make reference to multiple raises and contract extensions given to coaches who were then fired due to performance issues. Make note of Stricklin mishandling the football coach search by rejecting qualified candidates and focusing solely on a sunbelt conference coach with little experience. 173.219.33.43 (talk) 01:23, 27 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
