Gender[edit]

Throughout the article, Toto is referred to as "he". However, the gender in the information sidebar says "female". I've never read the books, so could someone clear up whichever gender is wrong? Ravenicus451 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 22:48, 3 April 2010 (UTC).[reply]

I'm pretty sure I remember him, from the classic movie, AND a "recent" appearance in Inkheart, as him/her being a Scottish Terrier. Anyone can confirm it, please? Izhido (talk) 14:43, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

As mentioned in the article, in the first Oz book Toto’s breed is not mentioned, though the original illustrator, W.W. Denslow, drew him as a terrier, either a Cairn or Scottish. In later Oz books, L. Frank Baum called him “a small black terrier,” and the illustrator, John R. Neill, drew him as a Boston terrier. In the 1939 movie, Toto was played by a Cairn terrier, in keeping with Denslow’s depiction; many (though not all) later versions follow this.
