Suggested renaming[edit]

Since there is no "official" name of this topic (as there would be for a person, movie, animal, political party, etc.), we are free to make up a name, as we have. However, I do not think the current name, "Tobacco bowdlerization" is a good pick. For openers, this is all about smoking in specific, not tobacco in general.

Next, "bowdlerize" is a fairly uncommon word.

Finally, the term "bowdlerize" more often refers to censoring/editing text to remove indecent/obscene material while all of the current discussion involves visuals (photos and movies) edited to remove images thought to encourage smoking. "written material that has been bowdlerized; the act of deleting or modifying all passages considered to be indecent"; "edit by omitting or modifying parts considered indelicate) bowdlerize a novel"; "a person who edits a text by removing obscene or offensive words or passages"; "censorship by publication of expurgated texts"

Whatever one may think of the process and the logic behind it, the term "tobacco bowdlerization" doesn't seem to fit. Alternative suggestions? - SummerPhD (talk) 01:33, 4 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest "excision", which implies the removal without judgment. This could be extended to the removal of brand names or commonplace items that usually have brand names (such as soft-drink bottles or cans), which I have seen done. Judgment may be made on removing something on the ground of deleting something detrimental to an image (such as an out-of-place object in an artistic photograph) or something irrelevant to a news photograph.
