link between the Swanns of Maryland and Virginia[edit]
In case anyone was wondering about the relationship between these northern Virginia and Maryland Swanns and the Swanns in the House of Burgesses before and after Bacon's Rebellion, a couple of family genealogy websites (for the Shirley and Philips families), say that Edward Swann and William Swann were brothers who sailed from Kent in England what would later become the American colonies. The problem is finding reputable sources, since the published volumes of Genealogies of Virginia Families (the various sets being compilations from the Virginia magazine of History and Biography, William and Mary Quarterly and Tyler's Quarterly) barely mention the family. According to the websites, William Swann's firstborn son was Thomas Swann who became a burgess for Surry County, Virginia (across from Jamestown) and member of the Council of State. That Thomas' firstborn, Samuel Swann, moved to (North) Carolina by 1700, although his younger brother Thomas Swann Jr. remained in Virginia and also served in the House of Burgesses. His son of the same name died shortly after him, and his daughter moved to North Carolina.Jweaver28 (talk) 21:52, 11 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
