Death of John Bains (Part I Chapter 4 (iii))[edit]

The final paragraph in this part of the chapter runs -

"The real murderer was having his dinner in the commercial room up at "The Tiger", opposite the town hall."

This might appear to suggest that Gerald Scales had entered the house and John Baines' bedroom at an oportune moment, and deliberately murdered him.

However, having read the rest of the story, from there, there is no further reference to this, and no further allusion to the fact, or possibility, that Scales had murdered Baines.

No, it just means that Scales was responsible for distracting Sophia from her responsibilities.
