- Please note that I have used in the opening statement only the maximum acceptable number of 1 million deportees from Kresy according to Wojciech Materski and Tomasz Szarota from IPN (ISBN 9788376290676), because the overall statistics have been revised in recent years thanks to cooperation with KARTA Center and the newly-declassified documents. Quote from the book:
Od 1988 r. Ośrodek KARTA, przy ścisłej współpracy z rosyjskim "Memoriałem", a od 2002 r. przy wsparciu finansowym IPN, opracowuje imienne wykazy represjonowanych na Wschodzie. Projekt "Indeks represjonowanych" doprowadził do ustalenia liczby ok. 320 tys. osób deportowanych w latach 1940-1941 z Kresów Wschodnich (nadal jednak liczba ta jest podważana przez część historyków, piszących o 700 tys. - 1 mln deportowanych).
