Historical Significance[edit]

This section could use a major overhaul both to conform to standard Wikipedia formatting (references in footnotes instead of an MLA-style parenthetical format) and its non-encyclopedic tone "What is it about The Gleaners and I that so captivated audiences and critics?". I'm going to tinker with the most egregious spots, but this still needs more work; it reads more like a cut-and-pasted student paper than a WP entry as it stands now.
