New sections added[edit]

I added details on the film's release in Japan and its critical reception in the 1990s and more recently. The article would really benefit from details on its release in other countries and the critical reception at the time of its 1956 release. 67.100.127.125 (talk) 05:53, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The editing and length of the film[edit]

Re: "the 143-minute film was condensed to 116 minutes, reputedly at Ichikawa's objection"

The problem was that permission to do filming in Burma didn't come through until January 1956. When a roughly edited part 1 opened, Ichikawa was in Burma for a week filming. Of the actors Shoji Yasui alone went to Burma. I think we're getting the full movie with 116 minutes.
