Porn Incident[edit]

Folks, if the porn incident story belongs anywhere (debatable) it should be on the entry for "Rapport" and not in the middle of the Sveriges Television entry. Rhombus 23:29, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please post in swedish media as political question of major concerned! J Joakimswede (talk) 20:42, 15 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

More on gender-switching[edit]

Just added a section about SVT's practice of switching genders of some characters in certain imported shows. I found these two sources while I was researching, but since I'm not that fluent in Swedish, I could not review them at all. I need a help from some native Swedish speakers (or those professionally fluent in Swedish), so I could expand that section somehow.

  • Borgert, Linnéa (16 September 2016). "Barnkanalen byter kön på karaktärer". Aftonbladet (in Swedish). Retrieved 19 November 2019.
  • A segment from a September 2016 episode of Medierna from Sveriges Radio P1.

So far, @Sjö: just made some adjustments, while @JIP: began analysing the sources above. JSH-alive/talk/cont/mail 17:00, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The first translation is available at Wikipedia:Reference desk/Language#Swedish broadcaster's newly found practice in airing non-Swedish TV series. JIP | Talk 22:35, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Why did you put it there (where it will soon scroll off) rather than here? —Tamfang (talk) 02:36, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That's where I first found the whole discussion in the first place. But never mind, I'll just copy-paste it here below. JIP | Talk 08:18, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

There is no way this is even remotely due weight. Three news articles that appear to have been quickly forgotten cover this, which is an extremely small proportion of the coverage in reliable sources. To me, this looks like a tabloid-like fascination with the unusual, and not encyclopedic material at all.Sjö (talk) 05:52, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You may be right on the due weight thing, but I think the case should be noted here anyway. As far as I know, no other broadcasters have conducted such changes to the imported shows before commissioning dub-makers to produce a translated version. I've seen many cases of cutting off religious symbols, altering references of one culture to another (for example, that infamous rice ball named "jelly-filled doughnut" in the 4Kids' English version of Pokémon), and removing on-screen appearances of weapons (like blades and guns). But deliberately changing a character's gender? That's never heard of (apart from some widely known mistakes like Spitfire [from MLP FIM], the female leader of a pegasus flight squad named Wonderbolts, accidentally voiced by a male voice actor in some non-English dubs).
The sources I brought up are indeed from 2016, but I remember seeing a recent example: in Rainbow Ruby (broadcast as Regnbågsstadens hjälte on Barnkanalen), a character originally known as Mr. Sloth was named Sengångarn (literally just "Sloth", I believe) and voiced by a female voice actress, while Miss Swan was called Prins Svan ("Prince Swan") and voiced by a male voice actor. At that time, Barnkanalen was also showing the Finnish version (Sanni Sateenkaari), supplied from Yle in Finland, at different times. The Finnish version had Herra Laiskiainen ("Mister Sloth") voiced by a male voice actor, and had Neiti Joutsen ("Miss Swan") voiced by a female voice actress, as original. But strangely, SVT did nothing on the Finnish dub. JSH-alive/talk/cont/mail 10:19, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

My translation of the Swedish text follows:

"You can be wild and active regardless of who you are. It's not reserved for boys"

The children's channel doesn't want to have just boys in main roles.
Therefore they often choose to regender the characters when dubbing foreign series. One example is "Super wings" where the red airplane Jett has been changed to a girl. - That was what we wanted. If they had said no then we would have said no to the series, says Pontus Torpvret, the buying manager of the channel.

In the original "Super wings", the main character "Jett" is a boy, but in the Swedish translation the same character is a girl.
Another example is the wild monster truck Linn in the series "Full fart i verksta", where in the original version it's a boy named Ted.
The SVT children's channel has started changed the genders of animated characters in foreign series in the last three years, which Medierna i P1 was among the first to notice.
Often it's about animal, machine or vehicle characters.
- It feels like it's the children's channel's duty to show that we're as much for girls as for boys. The ultimate goal is 50/50, says Pontus Torpvret, the buying manager of the channel.

"We want to have ordinary strong girls"

But it's not just about giving half of the main roles to girls, says Pontus Torpvred. It's also about what kind of characters girls get.
- We mostly want to show strong girls. Ordinary girls so to say. Girls who climb trees, girls who build cardboard box cars and girls who go on explorations. Like girls do in real life. At the same time we also want to show soft boys, he says.

About 70 per cent of the children's channel's material is bought from foreign countries. It can be an effort to find strong female lead characters.
- It is often tradition that girls must be nice and tidy. Girls often get a role where they show what is OK and what is not OK, whereas boys tend to be wild and free. Here is where we want to go one step further: You can be free and wild regardless of who you are. It's not reserved just for boys, says Pontus Torpvred.

"If they say no then we say no"

It is not always that the children's channel gets their way with their wish to regender the characters.
- There are some hindrances. Often these series are based on existing characters or some producer's original idea. Sometimes there are no problems and sometimes they question enormously and do not understand at all what we want to reach, but it is very different from one country to another, says Pontus Torpvred.

What happens if they say no?

- For example "Super wings", there we had this as a demand. If they had said no then we would have said no to the series. We already have series about planes and other vehicles as boys. We felt that we don't want to have another such series. So if they say no we say no, or we think again about why we want to buy the series.

Again, note that there might be the occasional minor error as Swedish is not my mother tongue. JIP | Talk 08:18, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Kiitos paljon. Your effort is much appreciated. JSH-alive/talk/cont/mail 10:19, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
