Removed: Suru Valley is famous for its natural environment.^{[citation needed]} There are many picnic spots in Suru Valley such as Damsna, Parkachik, Sangra, Taisuru, Karpokhar, Khous, Thulus, Stakpa, Umba Namsuru etc. Karpokhar Holy Shrine (Syed Mir Hashim), Khous Holy Shrine & Sanku Holy Shrine (Syed Haider) are famous for prayer in Suru Valley.

Suru vs. Purig[edit]

There are significant complications in dealing with the history of what we now call the "Purig" region (i.e., Kargil district minus Zanskar).

There are indications that "Purik" (or "Purig", "Burig" etc.) was originally the name of the Wakha Rong river and valley. Its meaning seems to have been gradually extended, first up to the Fotu La pass, then to the branch valleys such as Sangeluma (Chiktan), Sod Valley and perhaps even the Dras Valley. It is likely that "Purig" transitioned from being a geographical region to a political one (kingdom or chiefdom).

The region of "Suru" (i.e., the Suru Valley above the Kargil basin) was not included in Purig for the majority of the historical period. Its incorporation into the political Purig region probably occurred when Kartse's Thi dynasty ended ("incorporated into the chiefdom of Purig", in the words of Nichola Grist). -- Kautilya3 (talk) 13:29, 20 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
