Circumferential routes?[edit]

Is “circumferential routes” the official designation of these two loop routes? The expressway corporation uses a C is their numeric designation, but I always thought this meant just circular, since that’s (essentially) what these routes are. Checking the expressway corporation’s website, I also see that—well whattaya know!—circular is the official nomenclature! And circumferential sounds really bombastic, especially when one considers the smallness of the area these roads encompass. (Supporters of circumferential would have a better case using it in reference to the Ken’ōdō 圏央道, since that one actually does skirt a reasonably “outer” perimeter of the metropolitan area!) So what’s the justification for using this silly sounding “circumferential routes”? My conclusion is that there is none, hence my change (to the wording that’s officially used as well as intuitive).

Point: when writing about things with official names, use the official names, even if you disagree with them. Not doing so is a disservice to readers and undermines Wikipedia’s credibility. Jim_Lockhart 01:25, 12 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
