No offense, but this article is terrible.

Id flag it for something but I dont know how. Either it should be deleted or rewritten to not be a disgrace to Wikipedia and the song. This is a very good song, it should be treated as such :P Oggleboppiter 21:50, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've made an attempt to improve this page by cleaning it up and adding info from allmusic. I'm sure it could use further attention. Zariane (talk) 12:42, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Vocal refrain[edit]

All of the lyris sites tried, including that to Metro, currently linked, offer no help with the refrain repeated throughout the entire song by the backing singers:- "You know they're not sweeties"? "Old but not Swedish"? "You know your not Swedish"? "Go to Las Wages"? Any other suggestions? Surely a vital omission here. Martinevans123 (talk) 22:34, 8 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Songfacts kindly informs us: "The repeated refrain sung by the female backing singers says, "You go to Lost Wages, Lost Wages," sung to sound vaguely like "Las Vegas." It was inspired by a joke from comedian Lenny Bruce, who was a major influence on the band's lyrical outlook." But I suspect this is not considered WP:RS.
The song is also notable for the self-referencing lyric: "They got the Steely Dan T-shirt, And for the Coup de grâce". Martinevans123 (talk) 22:36, 17 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Frank Zappa reference?[edit]

I wonder whether the lick Skunk Baxter plays right after the line "they got the Steely Dan T-shirts" (2:25) is a nod to Montana by Frank Zappa. Wikiberger79 (talk) 08:46, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Over-Nite Sensation wasn't released until September 1973? Martinevans123 (talk) 09:15, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's right but FZ played Montana as early as October 1972. Both Becker and Fagen were fans, having seen the Mothers during their notorious Garrick Theater shows in 1967, so they might have been aware of the song. Maybe I'll try to ask Skunk Baxter directly. Ask away. But unless he's published something... Martinevans123 (talk) 08:11, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
