Origins of St. Stupid, Bishop Joey and the First Church of the Last Laugh

According to legend, St. Stupid was the son of a codpiece. It is also told that he had not one mother, but thousands. Wherever a country lass was deceived by a traveling player, wherever a child of questionable parentage was born, St. Stupid was there. He was a clever child who played the fool from an early age. He did not speak until he was in puberty, although he was able from the time he was two. He delighted in confounding and confusing his fellow beings. He did rock imitations. He slept with the chickens and crowed with the roosters. He traveled over most of the known world and much of the unknown world, creating mischief wherever he went. At times he attracted others and together they put on dumb shows where they confounded and swindled their audiences. The earliest known warrant for his arrest was 1310. The last warrant was dated 1947 in Dade County.

At some point, stupidity transformed in the Western World. It isn't that people stopped being stupid; far from it. In fact, the fear of stupidity became so great that people went to remarkably stupid lengths to disguise it. In this era, St. Stupid ceased to confound and delight people. He became an unspeakable terror. Historians largely agree, St. Stupid finally died in the early 1980s at a Marin County budget meeting.

As his soul slipped away, he looked for a vessel to channel his holy cause. Luckily for him, at that very moment, an itinerant actor named Ed Holmes was engaged in a violent argument while holding a handful of lit fireworks. The resulting explosion was the stupidest thing the fading Saint had ever witnessed. As Holmes writhed in pain on the beach, St Stupid entered his body and possessed him with the holy spirit of all things stupid. As his hand swelled to the size of a party balloon, he heard a voice within him admonish, " I know. I know. But you know. You never know."

As he was driven to the nearest hospital, Holmes renounced his mortal name and was known henceforth as Bishop Joey. He founded the First Church of the Last Laugh, which given this was northern California, immediately rose to cult status. Congregates exalted all things stupid about the human condition. The joys of stupidity were once again honored by a brave, committed band of followers.

As the Church grew in size and influence, a day was chosen to celebrate all things stupid. That date was April 1st. For the past thirty years, Bishop Joey and members of the First Church of the Last Laugh have paraded through the Financial District of San Francisco, altering reality on an annual basis.
