Pedestrian's reflector[edit]

When I originally created this article, I wanted it to be specifically about the wearable pedestrian type of reflector. These reflectors are mainly used in Scandinavia and Northern Europe and as far as I know there is no established name for such reflectors. Perhaps "Pedestrian's reflector" might be a better name for this article? Still, the name "safety reflector" is also used and there are similar pages in several other languages that cover both wearable reflectors and those used on vehicles and to make objects in general visible to drivers. It has been suggested that this article be merged with the one specifically about bicycle reflectors but this is in my opinion not a good idear. --Dumell (talk) 19:20, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Invented by Finnish farmer?[edit]

I removed the claim about the safety refelctor (the pedestrian kind) having been invented by a farmer from Finland. The statement had been questioned for over two years and still stood without a reference. As a Finn myself I am familiar with the claim, but let's keep it out of the article until someone finds a source for this claim that we can link to. --Dumell (talk) 19:40, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I believe the claim about the safety reflector being a Finnish invention from the 1960s is only well known in Finland. In some other countries it is also claimed to have been invented by a local - and earlier than in Finland. The National Society for Road Safety in Sweden claims the reflector is a Swedish invention from 1954 by Alvar Thorson (in Swedish: http://www.ntf.se/vasternor/vasternorrland/aktuellt/default.asp?display=print&RecID=42485).

In the United States Popular Science (the January issue from 1943) claims that that the pedestrian reflector was invented by highway patrolman Raymon Trask (http://books.google.fi/books?id=cycDAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA97&lpg=PA97&dq=pedestrian+reflector+invented+by&source=bl&ots=eSorBSy_2H&sig=SkkR_PgmoPHV8QQFwM1_fD7UaO8&hl=fi&sa=X&ei=faAOT7i0CbDa4QSyrfGFBA&ved=0CHkQ6AEwCTgU#v=onepage&q=pedestrian%20reflector%20invented%20by&f=false). I am not clear what was invented by whomever. Are we talking about a glass bead retro-reflector, a prismatic retro-reflector, or just a bright patch of cloth? Perhaps the invention was simply using a safety pin to attach a reflector to ones shirt. In any case this article might better serve as a subsection of Retroreflector or High-visibility clothing. Who invented the "reflector"?[edit]

There are two claims in the History Section as to who 'invented' or 'created' the 'reflector:

"The reflector was first invented en[sic] 1917 in Nice by Henri Chrétien..."
"The reflector is a Finnish creation, invented by a farmer Mr. Arvi Lehti from Pertteli..."

These conflicting claims need to be resolved through the addition of "reliable sources", or they need to be removed. Woodlot (talk) 16:17, 17 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Claim is not that Arvi Lehti invented reflector technology itself but modern _pedestrian reflector_ that we use today and can be seen from many directions instead of just one[edit]

No doubt there were "inventions" and proposed use of somekind pedestrian reflectors before Arvi's invention. These earlier "inventions" didn't turn to commercially viable products.

"In the mid-1960’s, the Finnish Traffic Police and the Finnish Traffic Safety Organization turned to a local Finnish firm, Talousmuovi (“Household Plastic” in translation), in order to obtain a reflector that could be used by pedestrians. Why is Coreplast Oy and Safety Reflector Finland Oy site relevant? Arvi Lehti established Talousmuovi Oy and in 1955 name is shortened to TALMU Oy. In 1983 TALMU Oy was sold to German Hella KGaA Hueck & Co. and name is changed to Hella Lighting Finland Oy. Finally 2006 TALMU part of Hella was sold to Coreplast Laitila Oy and 2016 it changes name to Safety Reflector Finland Oy.
