Return page to name Valbanera[edit]

This page was moved from "Valbanera" to "SS Valbanera" without discussion. The ship was never known as "SS Valbanera". As a Spanish owned and registered ship, it was referred to in Spanish as "vapor Valbanera", but all of the English sources I've seen refer to it as "Valbanera" without any prefix. I therefore propose to more it back to "Valbanera" in seven days if there is no objection stated. -- Donald Albury 10:14, 30 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

As the editor who moved the article in the first place, I say that there is no need to move it back. It is the accepted convention that steamships are prefixed SS, per ship prefix and that article on steamships are generally housed at a "SS Foo" title. This move to include "SS" in the title is contrary to the instructions at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (ships)#Naming articles about civilian ships, which states,

;Optional prefix
An article about a ship not known to have a prefix should use only the ship's name, if that name is unambiguous:
Niña

Since the optional prefix is, in fact, optional, it may be omitted for ships with unambiguous names even when common prefixes (e.g. MS or MV) are sometimes used for them in other sources:
Celebrity Equinox instead of MV Celebrity Equinox

The Valbanera was a Spanish ship, and the prefix "SS" is not used in the sources about the ship. Ship prefix is an article, not a naming convention. - Donald Albury 12:02, 10 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Quite wrong. While Spanish it may have been, but this is English-language Wikipedia, and yes since SS stands for steamship Valbanera was definitely called that. For example, see Houston Post for March 24, 1907 where it is called SS Valbanera as any other steamship. Or a number of newspapers for September 1919 where it is called just that.Crook1 (talk) 13:06, 10 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Needed work[edit]

The Wrecks.eu site is crowd sourced, and needs to be removed. I found an article published by the Spanish Navy about the wreck of the Valbanera, but my Spanish is not good enough to accurately translate it. - Donald Albury 19:01, 25 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
