SMP vs. Linux systems[edit]

I'd like to add a statement or section comparing the IBM philosophy of replacing individual elements of packages with the Linux/unix system of replacing a whole package by installing a .deb or .rpm, but I don't think I know enough to be sure of being correct. @Peter Flas: SMP and SMP/E can be considered both configuration management software like, e.g., SCCS, CVS, Subversion, Git, and package managers, e.g., APT, YUM. However, SMP has a much more robust way to handle dependencies, while not offering much support for merging independent changes to the same element. --Shmuel (Seymour J.)
