Updating RICS page[edit]

I work in the RICS Library, and have been tasked to update the RICS wikipedia pages with some basic changes. After reading the Conflict of Interest pages, I thought it best to ask if the proposed changes are acceptable.

The paragraph we want to change says:

"In 2008, RICS was represented or had affiliates in more than 146 countries and had a worldwide membership of more than 146,000. The majority of members are still based in the United Kingdom but there is now a strong international membership in many Commonwealth countries such as Canada, Hong Kong and Australia, and membership is growing rapidly in the United States and across Europe, Asia and Africa."

We would like to update the above with the following paragraph:

"In 2009, RICS was represented or had affiliates in more than 146 countries and had a worldwide membership of more than 159,000. The majority of members are still based in the United Kingdom but there is now a strong international membership in many Commonwealth countries such as Canada, Hong Kong and Australia, and membership is growing rapidly in the United States and across Europe, Asia, Middle East and North Africa and India." --Westminster-theodolite (talk) 15:01, 8 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello
I am glad to see that someone is working on this page as we (I am a Fellow myself) need to raise our profile.
In particular I am exceedingly irritated by the general public's impression of our skill sets and knowledge. This rises from Estate Agents, Councillors through to Ministers. Can someone please expand the citation (words) to include that we do know about such things as; Human Geography, Legislation, Operating costs, Financing property etc. We don't all do mortgage valuations (which I understand is only 10% of the Membership).
This means that we lose out on helping people and organisations to use property. An example is a Chartered Surveyor from CBRE I know, telling a Minister what was needed and the consequences, the Minister said that they would ask a Merchant Bank to check this - who promptly re-instructed CBRE

Table of contents(TOC) position[edit]

When articles, such as this one, have a very short lede it is a more efficient and aesthetically pleasing layout to force the TOC to appear at either the left or right margins with the lede paragraph(s) alongside.

This also has the result of reducing "white space" and the number of "page downs" necessary to view the article.

For those that do not like the TOC, display may be toggled off.

"Royal Patronage"[edit]

Westminster-theodolite are you still there? The article states The institution received its Royal Charter in 1881 and in 1921 was granted Royal Patronage by George V. What does "Royal Patronage" mean here? Can you advise? Qexigator (talk) 22:12, 22 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Royal Patronage refers to the support and/or encouragement given to any organization recognized by the Crown as being worthy of Royal support, for example certain charities or military support organizations, medical or educational research organizations. Yes, but the phrase "was granted Royal Patronage by George V" is solecistic in this context, and the question was addressed to the RICS for it to be corrected. Update to RICS Wiki introduction[edit]

Hi there. To progress suggested changes for the RICS Wikipedia page, I would like to suggest the following change to the first two paragraphs. Can the following be replaced with the text after the dotted line. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

+The top is supposed to be a summary of the information expanded with sources in the main body of the article. In the history section, there appears to be a conflict between the institutions's status as a body incorporated by charter and the statement that 'it trades as a limited liability company'. Generally, little of the article content is given a source, but reads as coming from some information published by the institution. There is no apparent reason for naming eleven past presidents if they lack any other notability. The 'full list' link only goes to the RICS home page. RICS was founded in London as the "Institution of Surveyors" after a meeting of 49 surveyors at the Westminster Palace Hotel on 15 June 1868. The inaugural president was John Clutton (who founded Cluttons, a property firm still in business today). RICS has occupied headquarters on the corner of Great George Street and Parliament Square since then.[1] It received a Royal Charter as "The Surveyors' Institution" on 26 August 1881.

The Surveyors' Institution became the "Chartered Surveyors' Institution" in 1930. Charitable works[edit]

Hi there. To reflect RICS' wider charitable work, can section 8 (Lionheart) please be renamed 'Charitable works' and the text be replaced with the below?

Charitable works

Lionheart is the benevolent fund for past and present RICS members and their families. The charity was established in 1899 and provides financial support, health and well-being packages, and work-related counselling and befriending support. RICS also supports the Chartered Surveyors Training Trust, which helps young people enter the profession through apprenticeships; Charity Property Help, which provides property advice to charities and voluntary organisations, and The Chartered Surveyors' Voluntary Service (CSVS), a registered charity providing free property advice to people who would otherwise struggle to access professional assistance.

Change to RICS Matrics section[edit]

Hi there. Please can the 'RICS Matrics' section be amended with the below text added in place of what is there. Can Matrics also be capital 'M' too, please?

RICS Matrics [1] (pronounced “matrix”) provides educational support, charitable and networking activities for surveying students, trainee surveyors (of any age) and Chartered Surveyors with ten years or less post-qualification experience. It comprises some 40 local groups across the United Kingdom. Established in 1889 as the Junior Committee, it became the "Junior Organisation" (aka "JO") in 1928 and re-branded to "RICS Matrics" in 2003. It also has links with the Young Chartered Surveyors in the Republic of Ireland.

Renaming 'Global spread' section and updating text[edit]

Please can the 'Global spread' section be renamed 'International presence.' Can the the text of this section also be replaced with the below? ...............

RICS is headquartered in London, with its main support functions in Coventry. There are regional offices in the UK, across mainland Europe, in China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, North America and Brazil.

In 2015, there were RICS-qualified professionals in more than 140 countries. The total number of those accredited worldwide was 120,000, plus student membership of 81,000. The majority of accredited individuals of members are are still based in the United Kingdom with large numbers also in mainland Europe, Australia and Hong Kong. There is now a strong growth globally, and particularly in China, India and the Americas.

RICS has close links with many national surveying institutions and is a founding member association of the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG). Within RICS the primary areas of practice represented at FIG are geomatics (land and hydrographic survey), environment, planning, construction and valuation.

RICS works in close collaboration with other professional bodies, central banks and international organisations such as The United Nations, World Bank and The European Union. In 2013 RICS was a founder member of the coalition to develop International Property Measurement Standards, which launched its first standard – for measuring office space – in November 2014.

In 2014 RICS was a founder member of the coalition to develop International Ethics Standards. In each case, coalition member bodies will implement the new standards through training and guidance for professional practitioners.

The organisation holds the largest independent database of cost plans in elemental form. BCIS is an affiliate member of the European Council of Construction Economists.

BCIS delivers bespoke research and consultancy projects to government bodies and private developers. Services include measuring price movement, benchmarking, market research, statistical analysis, forecasting, and impact studies. They are broken down into five key areas:

Entry to RICS membership is via four main routes: academic; graduate; technical; and senior professional. RICS has links with universities worldwide, with whom they have accredited approved courses which satisfy part of the qualification requirements to become trainee surveyors. RICS also offers expedited routes to membership for qualified professional members of some partner associations.

Members must update their knowledge and competence during their working life through Continuing Professional Development, so that the advice they give will be of the highest standard.

  • Associate members may use "AssocRICS" after their names (previously individuals members at this level were known as Technical Members and used the designation "TechRICS").
  • Professional members may use "MRICS" after their names (previously they members at this level were known as Professional Associates and used the designation "ARICS").
  • Fellows may use "FRICS" after their names.
  • Honorary members may use “HonRICS” after their names.

Individuals holding the Professional MRICS or FRICS designation are entitled to use the professional title designation "Chartered Surveyor" and variations such as "Chartered Building Surveyor" or "Chartered Quantity Surveyor" - depending on their chosen specialist qualifications and field of expertise.

RICS professional groups embrace the wide range of disciplines covered by surveyors. They are international in their outlook and are coordinated by individual boards and a designated staff director. RICS specifies 17 areas of specialism, each with their own professional group, clustered into Land, Property and Construction. Within each professional group there may be further specialisms.

Their responsibilities are to:

  • Contribute to the development of International Standards
  • Draft, review and maintain global and local guidance
  • Contribute to market insights on specialisms
  • Set the standard of professional competence required for successful qualification into RICS membership
  • Contribute to policy formation
  • Commission and undertake specialist research into market practice
  • Contribute to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) events to ensure members are on top of the latest developments in practice
  • Set the conditions for use of our specialist chartered designations

Professional groups also provide technical advice across RICS. They contribute to RICS’ regulatory agenda, and develop and maintain strategic alliances with other professional bodies and industry organisations. Most groups are also responsible for maintaining alternative designations (e.g. chartered quantity surveyor; chartered facilities management surveyor).

  • ECO Assessor Certification
  • Fixed Charge Receivership Scheme
  • Valuer Registration

@DavidCane: the Earwig's Copyvio Detector report that I ran at the time of tagging showed a 55.6% match and in-fact when I just ran the comparison tool again and explicitly told it to compare to that url, I got the same. The following text is 100% taken from the LinkedIn page:

Why do you assume that it is not the other way around. The text in the first two paragraphs of the International presence section, which is the majority of the matched text you cite, was added in this edit on 8 May 2015. This is before the subject of the LinkedIn page began working at RICS (July 2015), so it most likely pre-dates her LinkedIn entry.
You might also want to note that the text was one of a number of edits made at the request of NeilDBrown01 who works for RICS - see the talk page requests above. --DavidCane (talk) 20:26, 16 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
