Hall of Fame[edit]

After a brief, fruitless search, I cannot confirm this statement with an actual reference, but I heard from my brother (thoroughly trusted by me) that Root Boy was inducted into the Washington DC Music Hall of Fame (exact name? Like Jerry Garcia, Divine, and Sam Kinison, Root was a fat man who got himself cleaned up and then tragically died, more or less due to wear and tear. I know it sounds like I'm making fun, and how can you not, but it's the sad truth. I miss all those guys. I remember seeing him sweating and hoovering up cocaine in the back of the Grog and Tankard in DC during a show their in the early 1990's. Good show though. 1978[edit]

In 1978 I was a freshman at Georgetown Univ. Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band with the Rootettes was a regular performer on campus , at the Georgetown clubs and in the DC area. This was the year the Warner Bros album with "Boogie 'till you Puke" and "I used to be a Radical" was released. The Rootettes were a group of dancing singers that appeared with the band. In 1978, among the groups that appeared on campus and in Georgetown were Patty Smith, Elvis Costello, The English Beat, Devo, Trufax and the Insaniacs, Adam Ant, Gil Scott Herron and Dire Straits. There was also an excellent selection of jazz (Lerry Coriel), Reggae (Peter Tosh) and rock(Gratefuk Dead, Bruce Springsteen, the Kinks), blues (James Cotton, Muddy Waters) who appeared regularly in the area. Root was kind of a satyrical/political sogwriter like Gil Scott Herron (who was also living in DC at the time), along the lines of "B Movie", but not quite as biting. Root was the opening act for at least a couple of the national acts who appeared on camous. This was the same year that Lowell George of Little Featdied in the Key Bridge Marriott of a Cocaine bing(George should be remembered for his 1963 appearance on F Troop. I dated Foster Mackenzie in the spring of 1965. He introduced himself as Ken Mackenzie. We met at a mixer at the DKE house.I was a sophomore at a nearby Catholic woman's college. I was his date for the Yale prom. Diana Ross and the Supremes were the lead act. I have much more I could say but will not at his time. I did not know about his later years until recently. 1980 or '81[edit]

Saw Root Boy at the PsycheDelly in Bethesda. He was sitting outside with a glass of red wine & wearing a gray sweater. He asked, "Y'gonna see the show?"

Opening act was Nona Hendryx. Root's show ended with him falling down on the stage. He wore gray trousers inside-out, was bare-chested & had "I'm Dead" painted down his front. That was Root! 108.3.179.146 (talk) 16:20, 15 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
