Horse power[edit]

How much horse power does it have? 2600:1700:5664:C000:FDC0:5905:9E76:5248 (talk) 23:10, 9 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

In the case of engines that drive propellers it is simple to remove the propeller, install the engine on a test stand and connect the output shaft to a dynamometer, and accurately measure the output torque, speed and power. In the case of jet engines, that approach would be impossible because jet engines don’t have an output shaft; all the torque and power generated by the turbine is entirely consumed inside the engine, driving the compressor. Besides, the torque and power passing between the turbine and compressor are unrelated to the thrust between the engine and the airframe on which it is installed. So the performance of a jet engine is measured by the thrust it can exert, in newtons or pounds, not by power or torque. The article shows that the maximum thrust from this engine is a force of 38,000 pounds. Dolphin (t) 03:16, 10 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Horsepower rating for an Industrial Olympus is around 40,000 shp. The rating for an Olympus 593 would be somewhat higher.
"Due to the high inlet air temperatures at Mach 2 cruise - in excess of 120 °C (393 K; 248 °F)" - actual temperature of the air entering the compressor was ~ 600 °C (873 K; 1,112 °F) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.8.126.91 (talk) 09:39, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
