What's in a name[edit]

"Reason of the Polish Left" is the literal translation of the party's name, but utterly confusing to English speakers; "Reason Party" is slightly better, but such a loose translation that it borders on original research. We can't take an established English name from existing sources as the party is too insignificant to have received much media attention outside Poland; at the same time, we musn't establish a name in English ourselves. This raises the general question if the title of the article shouldn't be in Polish if no established English version is available. --Thorsten1 (talk) 20:19, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Racja is indeed "reason", but only in the sense of "reason to do something". It can also mean something like "correct view/opinion". It does not have a precise English equivalent. The name should be left in Polish.

The Polish world "racja" has a number of meanings, including one that is illustrated in the expression "racja stanu", "reasons of state." Poland's Racja Polskiej Lewicy party, as its program is described in the article, clearly thinks itself the party of reason. "Reason Party" seems the best English rendering of its name. The party's Polish name, Racja Polskiej Lewicy, is uncommunicative to a non-Polish-speaker. Nihil novi (talk) 11:43, 19 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I've heard the phrase "racja stanu". But I've never heard Polish racja used in the sense of rozum. Reason Party would be Partia Rozumu in Polish, wouldn't it? Stilgar27 (talk) 18:39, 19 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
An English rendering for this party's name is needed, as it is (and has been provided) for other Polish parties. "Racja Polskiej Lewicy" is not translatable as "Rightness [or Correctness] of the Polish Left". The only sensible English rendering is, I think, "Reason Party". The Polish "racja" derives from the Latin "ratio", the root of the English "rationality" (in Polish, "racjonalność") or "reason". Please see the Wiktionary entry for "reason". Yeah, so there is a word play inovolved. Stilgar27 (talk) 10:50, 21 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Supported or opposed NATO membership?[edit]

Shouldn't it rather mean "opposed NATO membership" as it's a ultra-left party? --212.186.7.98 (talk) 10:54, 22 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Most of the article is in a MOS:SANDWICH between the demonstration image and infobox. Dialmayo (talk) 14:08, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Dunno why I left this here instead of fixing it, but I did now. Dialmayo (talk) (Contribs) she/her 16:17, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
