SO what happened to Mr Dytham? What crime was he convicted of, and what sentence did he receive?

In answer to your question, the offence that he was convicted was either the common law offence of misconduct in a public office (also known as misfeasance or misbehavior) or (if it is a distinct offence and I can't remember at this moment) neglect of duty by a public officer.
