A disambig?[edit]

Just a quick glance at the What links here, of about 150 links to this page, none of them appear to be anything but Runs batted in. Does anyone think this should be a disambig or redirect right to the main article? Metros232 12:36, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If one does a google search for RBI, the first link is to Reserve Bank of India. The Americans are taking over! --Grubb 06:34, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've reverted your cut and paste move. Please refer to Wikipedia:Requested moves for more information on how to proceed. Ewlyahoocom 08:17, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Alright. Thanks. --Grubb 18:03, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

RBI (disambiguation)RBI — RBI is an acronym for several popular terms like Reserve Bank of India and Run batted in. Therefore, RBI should be a disambig page and not a redirect. —Grubb 18:07, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support - I agree with this one since there a so many potential meanings for "RBI" and I don't feel the baseball term is the principal one. --Tλε Rαnδom Eδιτor (tαlk) 20:14, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose, just based on the shear number of links intending the baseball meaning. Ewlyahoocom 22:39, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support RBI has a a variety of meanings even within the top ten hits on searches in various media. Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL The fact that some Wikipedians are too lazy to type [[run batted in|RBI]] instead of [[RBI]] shouldn't have any bearing; there's a WikiProject devoted to cleaning up that sort of thing. cab 05:38, 3 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose — per M-W and AHD dictionaries. Other usages of "RBI" are?... not expected by primary speakers of English. (English is not the primary language in India.) However, if somebody can show me that the Indian usage of RBI is more common in the UK, I will change my opinion.--Endroit 17:09, 6 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose: RBI happens to be an acronym for a few things but no one has shown whether that acronym is commonly used. It would be quite easy for me to show how often RBI is used to denote run batted in. As mentioned by Ewlyahoocom, the number of baseball-related links is a good start to show how often RBI means run batted in. —Wknight94 (talk) 01:09, 8 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion[edit]

Any additional comments:

Though RBI has many potential meanings, WP:DAB instructs "When a reader enters a given term in the Wikipedia search box and pushes "Go", what article would they most likely be expecting to view as a result?" This would seem to favor run batted in. — AjaxSmack 04:40, 2 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A quick note for the record: the only reason baseball editors have not flooded this with opposes is because this talk page is not on anyone's watchlist. If it is moved, a return move would probably be filed within hours and would be passed overwhelmingly. —Wknight94 (talk) 01:14, 8 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

More on the move[edit]

I'm not going to relist the move for the moment, and I take the point above that baseball fans are probably a majority in Wikipedia. But surely, that's not the issue.

Is it really suggested that an obscure baseball term is the primary meaning? http://data3.blog.de/media/132/2333132_da3e2cd0e8_m.jpg gives the logo for Radio Berlin International. Most Germans speak English. English Wikipedia caters for all English speakers, not just native speakers. In India, of course, RBI means Reserve Bank of India. Fewer Indians speak English proportionately than Germans, but there are a lot of Indians. Few of them would have any idea what run batted in meant, or even even recognise it as a well-formed English phrase. Andrewa (talk) 02:01, 10 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Juzz search "RBI" in the most popular search engine google and see the result. This is utter nonsense to make "run batted in" the redirect page for RBI. They juzz think that native English speakers are the only people who use internet. Such a coward act to protect the editing of page RBI after redirecting it to "run batted in".

The result of the proposal was no consensus for move. Per the discussion, the baseball term is put forward as the primary topic by the opposers and since no one provided any research to back up that basis for opposition, I note that this search verses this search supports that contention.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 00:48, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Move?[edit]

Several terms, yes. That means there should be a disambiguation page. If one of the terms is the primary topic, then the base name should be (or redirect to) that page, not to the dab page. The earlier discussion left us with a primary topic. -- JHunterJ (talk) 14:59, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support

A search term "RBI" in wikipedia should list out the different stuff which has the same acronym when more than one terms are popular as in this case. Bharathmeister (talk) 20:56, 9 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support

A Google search with the words RBI gives Reserve Bank of India as the the first hit. I suggest that RBI should be a disambiguation page, if not a redirect to Reserve Bank of India. --Belasd (talk) 18:26, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose

Reasons already stated here during last move proposal. Baseball usage in English language far outweighs any other usage. Please show that it even has other common usage among English speakers (just because the abbreviation exists doesn't mean it is commonly used). And please be ready to fix the many exisiting wiki-links. JustSomeRandomGuy32 (talk) 18:20, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment. This proposal should be now is listed at WP:RM, since it would require moving the disambiguation page from its current title to this one. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 13:09, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose, because there's a primary topic. Yes, the WP:RM process should be followed. -- JHunterJ (talk) 14:59, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose The primary topic is the baseball usage. --AndrewHowse (talk) 15:07, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose The baseball term is IMO the most common use of RBI. TJ Spyke 20:02, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Copied from previous request above: "Though RBI has many potential meanings, WP:DAB instructs 'When a reader enters a given term in the Wikipedia search box and pushes "Go", what article would they most likely be expecting to view as a result?' This would seem to favor run batted in." The main other possibility is the Reserve Bank of India. If someone can show that it is primarily or exclusively referred to as RBI, I am open to persuasion but, otherwise, oppose the move. — AjaxSmack 03:23, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose, baseball usage is by far the primary topic. -M.Nelson (talk) 03:19, 19 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Run Batted In[edit]

How many people outside US even know of baseball? --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 07:20, 23 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Lots. See History of baseball outside the United States, Baseball in Cuba, Baseball in Japan, and Baseball in the United Kingdom. -- JHunterJ (talk) 11:38, 23 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I see....4 countries...that's it..... IMO, that isn't NET Nuetrality.....it's partiality.... --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 15:32, 23 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Net neutrality has no bearing on WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. Similarly, although I personally don't care about the sport of cricket and would (if it were just up to me) choose the insect for the primary topic of Cricket, consensus has it that the sport (that doesn't get much play in the U.S.) is the primary topic. Is that also partiality? -- JHunterJ (talk) 17:41, 23 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

An editor has identified a potential problem with the redirect RBI and has thus listed it for discussion. This discussion will occur at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2022 January 27#RBI until a consensus is reached, and readers of this page are welcome to contribute to the discussion. ---CX Zoom(he/him) (let's talk|contribs) 19:35, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
