Latin?[edit]
is it REALLY hawai'ian?
this strikes me as being just TOO close to latin "bono" for coincidence.
i would suspect it is only "hawai'ian" in the way that HAPA (half) or WIKI (quick) have come to be.

- No it's definitely Polynesian, not a borrowing from Latin. C.f. Marquesan "pono" meaning correct, or proper, or done properly; Māori "pono" meaning true or correct; Tuamotan "pono" meaning direct or straight ahead etc. Found in all Eastern Polynesian languages as far as I can tell. --2.219.112.131 (talk) 16:45, 28 May 2016 (UTC)
- Furthermore, wiki is not derived from English "quick" at all. It also has clear cognates in other Eastern Polynesian languages: Tahitian viti, Rarotongan viti, Tuamotan viti all meaning quick or rapid. Note the Hawaiian k corresponds to t in other Polynesian languages, as attested in other roots (e.g. Tahiti became the semi mythical homeland "Kahiki" in Hawaiian oral history). --2.219.112.131 (talk) 16:55, 28 May 2016 (UTC)
