Near future?[edit]

Just reading the opening of this text, it seems like given the numbers cited the setting can't be so near future, it would have to be something like 2080 at the earliest wouldn't it? A lot can happen in 65 years. Plus it seems odd, given the extensive commentary at the front of the book concerning copyright that people would still be fighting copyright law rough and tumble in 2080. Is this an alternative universe or what? And given the subject matter, it seems completely at odds with the authors preface, "Today, October 2, 2012 is the hardest it will ever be to copy things. @184.63.132.236: Only saw this question today. Did you read the book? I'm reading it currently, and it was written in 2012. Doctorow's book came before that SOPA/PIPA thing, so it would be in a near future. The book is not a documentary, it is an alternate reality. That's why this page contains this: "The novel is set in a dystopian near-future [...]". His preface was telling us about the laws which were denied, and that downloads were at that date, according to him, in the highest level of difficulty. MYS 77 ^✉ 02:21, 29 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
