[Untitled][edit]

"In Greek mythology, the Pierides (Greek: Πιερίδες) or Emathides (Greek: Ἠμαθίδες) were the nine sisters who defied the Muses" ...

In this context "defy" does not feel right. It can be used to mean "challenge", but then appears to need to be in the construct "defy to", as in "I defy you to win against me". Otherwise, to "defy" without an appropriate infinitive sounds like it should mean "disobey". I contend that "challenge" would be a better word here, as it is far clearer what it means: "challenged the Muses to a contest of song" (note, not "in").

Please excuse me if this is not what the first sentence is supposed to mean, or that a more poetical feel is required here rather than the bald statement of the facts, in which case let it stay as it is. I have no qualifications in the English language or the Classics except for a lifelong immersion in my mother tongue. --Matt Westwood 19:28, 26 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
