Insights[edit]

Thank you for the insights on how Wikipedia works. It's interesting and I'm happy to see how speedy your reaction was. However, given the recent coining of the new term, I see no reason why this term should not be added to the Wikipedia, as it is obviously interesting to researchers, who might be considering to apply similar methods in order to prevent extinction. I am planning to write an introduction and the outcome of the experiment. Atlien26 09:42, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(I hope this article doesn't get deleted until i can continue to work on it. Obviously there is much to be done.) Atlien26 09:42, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hiya. I'd definitely recommend that you make a backup of this article on your own computer (copy-paste the wiki-markup to a text file, then save that), in the offchance it does get deleted.

It may work better as a subsection of an article that deals with pandas in captivity, but I'm not very knowledgable about the state of biology articles on Wikipedia.

"Panta pornography" definitely looks like a joke/vandalism page, but as a native of the Washington, D.C. (home to the only American pandas in captivity - or does the San Diego Zoo also have some?), I can attest that the term exists - albiet as a bit of a colloquialism. --Action Jackson IV 09:47, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeh, I agree, reality sometimes is fun. :) Atlien26 14:30, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I just stumbled upon the term "panda porn" on boingboing and cnn.com and wanted to lookup what wikipedia knows about it. I for one appreciate this article. please extend it. --peter

Putting this article in the "Pornographic films by genre" category seems a little strange to me. Even though the term is "panda pornography," it's not really pornography in the sense that it's not really adult entertainment, like the rest of the articles in that category. It seems more approriate to put this article into a category about animal conservation. Dagojr (talk) 16:36, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

why not? it entertains me 2800:810:565:8B57:D5A8:1AA3:85EB:5211 (talk) 18:26, 4 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

That is indeed an excellent idea. The article is now placed in Category:Conservation. - Takeaway (talk) 23:31, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

and others[edit]

I think similar techniques have been extended to other species, and will try to get references. If I do, someone will need to find a more general title.DGG 17:03, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What about "Pornography for animals"? If similar cases have been documented we could merge and redirect this and create that as a new article. Just try finding some references.--h i s s p a c e r e s e a r c h 12:45, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I removed the hangon tag which is no longer needed. If anyone still wishes to ddelete despite the good documentation, Afd is the place. DGG 17:03, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Term appropriateness[edit]

Is there a record of who coined this term? It seems wrong because pandas are not paid for sex so they are not prostitutes and porn- means prostitute. Bonechamber (talk) 09:42, 17 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

See the references at the bottom of the page and you will see that reputable news agencies use the phrase "panda porn", short for "panda pornography". Also, in wikipedia pornography is defined as "the explicit portrayal of sexual subject matter for the purposes of sexual arousal and erotic satisfaction". As such, the films shown to the pandas to further their species while in captivity, justifies the title of this article. there is no mention of the fact that paid prostitutes must be involved although probably, in mainstream pornography, they would be. - Takeaway (talk) 11:09, 17 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The analysis that a word must mean the same as its etymological roots seem highly flawed. Cf. English examples like "silly" (blissful), "deer" (animal), "haven" (harbor). And what about pornography in media such as literature or comics? 惑乱 Wakuran (talk) 19:43, 16 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This is something called "panda pornography", in an elegant and fun shorthand. It is not, however, actually pornography, which is a term defined in relation to humans: we are not in a position to ask pandas their opinion on the matter, and it's an interesting epistemic question as to whether we can even contemplate the possibility of doing so. Only a very small number of zoophiles would be aroused by it, and their opinions don't count as they are both (a) an insignificant minority among humans, and (b) not pandas. Compare "food pornography", the photographic depiction of delicious food for the interest of foodies, which is also not pornography. -- The Anome (talk) 09:14, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
