Panacea is a sleepy fishing village located on Dickson Bay off the Gulf of Mexico. Located about an hours drive south of Tallahassee, Florida, on Highway 98, Panacea is the gateway to the route 98 drive along coastal North Florida and one of Florida's finest nature parks. Panacea is named for the several mineral springs that were considered to be very therapuetic during the late 1900's. Even though the springs fell into disrepair, locals continued to visit them regularly to collect bottles of spring water for consumption. The springs water is very rich in dissolved solids and has a noticeable rotten egg odor. Otherwise, once you get past the initial odor, the water is quite tasty. Mostly a retirement community, Panacea is a quiet and tranquil place, surrounded by National Forest preserves. A number of good seafood restaurants are found in the area due to the proximity of various fishing ports. Recreation is hunting, fishing and swimming. With huge tracks of national forest, hunting can be quite an experience. Fishing in plentiful with numerous charter boats available from various ports and docks in the area and the mile long bridge over the shallow Oclocknee river offers many fishing docks along its sides. Fresh water swimming is offered at the spring fed Silver Lake and Alligator Point offers beach goers a day in the sun among expensive waterfront homes.
