First World War[edit]

The layout in the First World War section looks as though it could be improved by moving the image to the top of the section. This may get rid of the white space and allow the quote to be full width. I have not done it as may need checking out on different screen widths to mine. Keith D (talk) 13:02, 16 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Done, as requested. It doesn't make a great deal of difference on my old-fashioned pc monitor (44cm diag, 34cm width screen), but I agree it may help others. Although I gather that a lot of our regular contributors may use the latest wide-scrren laptops, I suspect that most of our mass readers in first world countries use their phones or an ipad-type screen, so they would use the cellphone view option, which tends to force images under the text, so no squashing. I tend to test "my" created articles out on my old-fashioned pc monitor because I'm guessing that a huge number of people in less fortunate circumstances will still be using this old type of screen. But who knows. I wonder whether any survey has been done on that subject, because it would help to make more informed choices as to layout, especially that rule about not squeezing text between images. Do you know which size or type of screen our layout guidelines are based on,if any? Storye book (talk) 15:28, 16 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, looks better on my laptop. No idea what the layout guidelines target, I just try to find the best I can then see if others complain or change it. Keith D (talk) 19:12, 16 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Haha, I guess we all do that, one way or another. The only layout complaint that I have had from a specific screen user was from someone with a wide screen setup, who insisted that everyone else had the same wide screen (?). I found that moving all images to the right, if there were few enough, or moving all images into a gallery or galleries, appeared to satisfy them. So since then I have tended to use layouts which – I hope – suit both my screen and the wide-screen type. Storye book (talk) 10:24, 17 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
