References[edit]

References 2 and 3 seem to be much the same and rather railfans' dreams than factual. One's last newsletter is from 2007. Is not the Connaught Tunnel firmly in Crossrail's net (unless the Government cancels the whole country)?--SilasW (talk) 11:34, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

They are certainly related, but provide different aspects of the proposed project. I'm sure it would be possible to find supporting references in the railway press. Other links available at the time (such as that from the Borough Council) are no longer accessible.
I think the project was more than just a pipe-dream, but whether it got any further than what was shown on the 2007 websites is another matter. Crossrail was announced later (IIRC) and would certainly impact the proposals. In the absence of new information, I just re-factored the available information in a (hopefully) NPOV manner.
Incidentally, I have no connection with the project, nor the area, except as a one-time visitor to the now-closed railway museum.

The link to the closure notice on Silverlink's site no longer works. Poggs (talk) 12:43, 18 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Up and Down line definitions[edit]

Until Local government re-organisation under the London Government Act 1963; North Woolwich Station was in the area of The Metropolitan Borough of Woolwich, and the area of The London County Council. It was, therefore "in London". However, trains leaving North Woolwich (for Stratford) were regarded as "Up" trains, and trains to North Woolwich (from Stratford) were regarded as "down" trains. Is there any other places where the "Down" line led into "London"; and the "Up" line led away from "London". Stratford, (and the other stations on the line, Silvertown, Custom House, Canning Town, and West Ham) were in the County Borough of West Ham; and therefore technically "in Essex". All this was swept away on 1 April 1965, when The London Borough of Newham was created. 86.176.212.247 (talk) 17:24, 23 January 2015 (UTC) Ben of Chichester[reply]

"Up" and "Down" don't mean towards or away from London, and have nothing to do with local authority boundaries. They normally indicate towards (up) or away from (down) the mileage zero of the line (there are exceptions, particularly in south Wales). In the case of the North Woolwich branch, the zero point is at Victoria Park Junction, east of Homerton and a quarter of a mile west of Hackney Wick. See this RCH Junction Diagram, upper left, where the purple line (Great Eastern Railway) branches off the dark blue line (North London Railway). So Up is towards Homerton; down is towards North Woolwich. --Redrose64 (talk) 18:04, 23 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Where should a link to the the Ian Visits page The disused North Woolwich railway station is up for sale (ianvisits.co.uk)be placed? Jackiespeel (talk) 17:56, 28 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ian Visits is a blog, albeit somewhat credible, so ideally a better source should be found. 10mmsocket (talk) 18:01, 28 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Put it in external links. Roger 8 Roger (talk) 20:08, 28 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The only point I would make - the entry is from 2020, so there may be more recent information. Jackiespeel (talk) 11:20, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

And here is an update. Jackiespeel (talk) 18:44, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
