Average compared to mean[edit]

The page makes a crucial mistake: "Average" and "Mean" are not the same thing; Average is what the page states, but "mean" is the salary sum above which is half of the salary earners. Average salary is usually higher than the mean.Jheyno (talk) 07:20, 13 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No, the mean is the total salary divided by the number of workers. Jheyno is thinking of the median. 'Average' refers to any summary measure of the centre of a distribution, but mostly it is used as a synonym for the mean. To avoid confusion, the word 'average' should be avoided in technical work.TerryM--re (talk) 20:06, 24 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
