Good faith, but uncited &/or WP:OR edits[edit]

This is somewhat similar to the situation with members of the Australian Defence Force who receive the Australian Defence Medal after 4 years service, and a long service medal at 15 years.

a) How is receiving 2 medals after 15 years even vaguely similar to receiving one after 4 years, and one after 15 years? b) How/why is this of relevance?Pdfpdf (talk) 11:19, 26 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

There was^[when?] a proposal to seek an extension of the award to include Australian police who were eligible to have been awarded a State-based police service medal for diligent and ethical service over at least a 15 year period. This proposal was to be considered after the initial issue of the Australian Police Service Medal, and was expected to receive the support of most State and Territory Police Ministers. The proposal also required the support of the Federal Home Affairs and Justice Ministers.^{[citation needed]} Retrospectively awarding such a medal to retired or former Australian police was intended to follow a similar precedent where the Australian Defence Medal was approved by the Queen, and then retrospectively awarded to all serving and former post-Second World War ADF personnel who met the criteria.^{[citation needed]}

So what? Why is this either of interest, or of relevance? And what was the outcome? And in any and all cases, it should not appear in the lede, either. Pdfpdf (talk) 11:19, 26 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Latest Press Release. In April, 2014 the Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced that eligibility for the award of this medal will be backdated to the introduction of the Australian Awards System in 1975. This will make 20,000 former police officers eligible for the award of the medal.

The NPSM medal is awarded to all sworn members of Australia's police forces upon completion of 15 years ethical and diligent service on or after 30 October 2008, or for a lesser period, if that service was terminated due to the member’s death or to an impairment related to the discharge of their duties as a Constable of Police.

Extensive lobbying continues to this date. Prior to the last federal election the opposition (now government) gave an undertaking to review the award of this medal to do away with the anomaly where military personal are treated differently. Former officers feel they are being treated as second class citizens. There would be a public outcry if for example the Australian Defence Medal was only awarded to currently serving members and all other military personnel including those with war service were to be denied the medal in the same way that former police officers have been denied the National Police Service Medal.(citation needed) Any police officer killed on duty before 30 October 2008 is still denied the award of this medal. As an example suppose two officers who both joined the police on the same day and both with 20 years service were on patrol together on the night of 29 October 2008 when they were gunned down by an armed offender. Officer one dies instantly and officer two lingers on and dies two days later. The next of kin of officer two would receive his NPS medal and the next of kin of officer one would receive nothing because he died too soon. How ridiculous is this. The two officers gunned down at Crescent Head, the young policewoman killed by a bomb blast in Melbourne, the officer killed by a bomb whilst opening a parcel in Adelaide, non of these brave officers will receive this medal. This sort of "discussion" is NOT appropriate on an article page, PARTICULARLY when it is completely uncited, AND contains original research WP:OR Pdfpdf (talk) 11:19, 26 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't mis-understand my intent - this information is all "good stuff" but Wikipedia "rules"/"policies" require that it be incorporated into an article in ways that satisfy the "rules"/"policies". Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 11:19, 26 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to point out to the unsigned comment regarding death and eigibility, maybe they should read the actual criteria: "The National Police Service Medal can also be awarded to persons whose ability to complete the minimum qualifying period has been removed through death, injury or disability in the course of their police service." Thus they could be awarded such after death depending on their particular Force and Commissioner etc. YEPPOON(talk) 12:19, 03 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
