Range[edit]

The range is way too long for flank speed, presumably it is a range at some cruising speed like 15 kts that has been garbled. (The very similar Kuma and Sendai types had about that range.) TiC ^(talk) 00:32, 14 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. http://pwencycl.kgbudge.com/N/a/Nagara_class.htm gives the cruising speed as 14 knots, and it looks like the original source is Lacroix and Welles, who are probably the definitive source. I went ahead and corrected it. --Yaush (talk) 15:55, 14 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Further modifications[edit]

I was just looking at a model of what was supposed to be the Abukuma, and I was surprised that the model does not match the description here. That model shows six twin mounted guns in open mounts, on on the forecastle, one abaft the funnels, and one on the stern decking, presumably 12.7cm DP guns (they could even be the more modern 10cm guns like the Akizuki class, just in open mounts? They seemed quite small), along with 9 triple-mount 25mm AA guns. I know it's just a model, but it's from Japan and I have reason to believe these models are generally quite accurately rendered. Is it possible that there was a further modification, perhaps to reduce weight or increase the number of torpedoes carried, or even to make a more effective transport out of the vessel? Obviously this is no reference for an article, but does any editor know any more details about this?

okay, I found at least one drawing, not a very large one, of ta Nagara class cruiser. clearly showing the triple twin-gun open top turrets. https://qph.fs.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-53cad66195e8f3e0bb08a2ad18f958da It's part of an answer on Quora by a person who claims it is "as modified for the AA escort cruiser role". Not much but it's food for thought. Perhaps this comes under the heading of "no two were modified the same way", but the text seems to definitively state that they were armed with Armament A and then Armament B.

 "Above: Nagara class scout cruiser as originally armed; big buses with six relatively weak guns (for a cruiser) on the broadside in open shields and four torpedo tubes to a beam. Unfortunately matched in fighting power by the far smaller ‘Special Type’ destroyers which they ended up leading. Even if utilised outside the flotilla leader role in cruiser squadrons they would have been unimpressive. Below: As converted for the AA escort role later in WW2, they were far less well-armed or potent than even the old British ‘C’ class AA conversions."
