Regarding Location[edit]

"Location" and "Mailing Address" are not synonymous - please read the section in the article itself which covers the location of the hospital. HerbertMMarx (talk) 21:09, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I tried adding "Address:" to the infobox a long time ago, but it doesn't show up (I'm guessing it's a template thing). The ideal thing would be to have:

Location: Highland Avenue & Bay Avenue, Glen Ridge, NJ
Mailing Address: 1 Bay Avenue, Montclair, NJ 07042

But I can't get that to work. The hospital has, in the past, occasionally used an address with both towns in it, so it seemed a good compromise. HerbertMMarx (talk) 01:36, 5 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, the post office put an end to using both towns in the address, so the Hospital had to choose and chose to go with "Montclair." I looked up the template and it seems to indicate you can rename the "Location" title to read something other than Location but I cannot figure out how to do that.
Would you oppose using "Border of Glen Ridge and Montclair, NJ" as the location, leaving the street names out of it entirely? I'm trying to find something un-awk that references the fact that portions of the Hospital lie in both towns and that the Hospital itself identifies itself as a "Montclair" institution.
This seems an entirely silly debate, with few reliable independent sources on either side. One of the linked sources is to a baristanet.com post which demonstrates how much of an issue this really is. Then again, I'm not from Glen Ridge and I'm certainly not its mayor, who seems to have a particular objection to the typical usage that Mountainside Hospital is in Montclair.

First of all, let's be clear - no portion of Mountainside Hospital is in Montclair, so when you say "portions of the Hospital lie in both towns" you are repeating a commonly-held, but completely false, belief. The Star Ledger had a great article on this a few years ago (which was the source of the referenced Baristanet article), unfortunately, the Ledger does not keep their stories available online forever. And, in spite of your statement to the contrary, there are lots of independent sources showing the exact location of Mountainside Hospital, they are just not available online. Maps are available from both the Borough of Glen Ridge and the Township of Montclair. Every map that shows the boundary between Glen Ridge and Montclair shows that the hospital is completely within Glen Ridge - because it is. I was able to find one online map that actually shows the border, which is the one referenced in the article itself.

There is nothing mysterious about people objecting to falsehood being presented as fact. The probable reason that knowledgeable people, including mayors, have a "particular objection" to the usage "that Mountainside Hospital is in Montclair" is because that statement is a lie.

And no, this is not a silly debate. Facts are facts, and where something is located is a fact. And it is far from trivial - you could even say it is a matter of life and death - birth and death certificates for the hospital are issued by Glen Ridge. Crimes committed at the hospital are investigated by the Glen Ridge Police Department, the resultant reports are filed in Glen Ridge, and are included in Glen Ridge's crime statistics. The hospital is subsidized by Glen Ridge taxpayers (although less so since it went for-profit - because now property taxes are paid to Glen Ridge by the hospital). But even forgetting about the local angle, it is also a question of accuracy. An encyclopedia should strive to be, first and foremost, factually accurate, and to the extent an encyclopedia is inaccurate, it does its readers and itself a disservice.

That said, given the template issues, I suppose that the way it is stated in the infobox currently is factually accurate and, while not ideal, is acceptable to me. HerbertMMarx (talk) 19:10, 5 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It is very important to correct identify the hospital with the location that appears on birth certificates. Historically, there has been great confusion as to the birthplaces of individuals born near the Montclair-Glen Ridge border (including Buzz Aldrin).

Anyone needing to a birth or death certificate for a person who was born or died in this hospital needs to know to contact Glen Ridge, not Montclair.

This is not about practical or semantic accuracy. It is essential information needed to obtain proof that a birth was in the U.S., proof of a date of birth, or proof of a death, on which ability to establish citizenship, get a license to drive, and collect life insurance money, respectively depend. 71.109.150.215 (talk) 02:28, 5 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Location[edit]

Alright, is the hospital in Glen Ridge or Montclair? Here's the census map for Essex Co., it looks like Glen Ridge (at least predominantly, use the tracks). Esszet (talk) 00:21, 13 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
