I'd like to see this article list the Moliere radius for the electromagnetic calorimeters on ATLAS and CMS and other leading particle calorimeters. I know the CMS uses lead-tungsten crystals in its calorimeter. Pulu (talk) 00:47, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

Outdated approximation for E_c

Please read the current Review of Particle Physics (RPP) before inserting a formula from the one decade old Particle BriefBook. This 0.0265 (from the BriefBook) implying E_c ≈ 800 MeV/(Z + 1.2) is coming from the old Berger & Seltzer fit. The current Review of Particle Physics (section 27.4.3) states:

[...] Berger and Seltzer [46] also give the approximation E_c = (800 MeV)/(Z + 1.2). This formula has been widely quoted, and has been given in older editions of this Review [47]. Among alternate definitions is that of Rossi [2], [...] This form has been found to describe transverse electromagnetic shower development more accurately (see below). [...]

The accuracy of approximate forms for E_c has been limited by the failure to distinguish between gases and solid or liquids, where there is a substantial difference in ionization at the relevant energy because of the density effect. [...]

[47] is the ancient RPP from 1992, by the way. The proper relation is that R_M = X₀ E_s/E_c, where E_c is a material constant, and for which a separate gas-liquid/solid fit should be used (given in the Review of Particle Physics), and not the one from Berger & Seltzer. — Ylai (talk) 02:22, 8 May 2011 (UTC)
