Population updates[edit]

Population data from the United States Census Bureau may be updated either:

(1) Every ten years with data from the decennial United States Census, or
(2) Annually with data from the decennial United States Census and annual population estimates from the United States Census Bureau.

The following table shows when population data is available:

United States Census Bureau Population Data

Source: Decennial Census Population Estimates
Date: April 1 of years divisible by ten July 1 of years not divisible by ten
Region: date population data available
nation December December 1
state
statistical area February-March of next year April 1 of next year
county
places June 1 of next year

CSAs vs MSAs/µSAs[edit]

This table is a little misleading because the top left header is "Combined Statistical Areas" yet it includes MSAs (Metropolitan Statistical Areas) and µSAs (Micropolitan Statistical Areas), both of which are not comparable to CSAs, but instead are components that can make up CSAs.

Moreover, CSAs do not have statistical comparability to MSAs and µSAs. See [1] ("Because CSAs represent groupings of metropolitan and/or micropolitan statistical areas, they should not be ranked or compared with individual metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas.").

A good fix might be to change this list to look like [[1]] and [[2]]

Out of date[edit]

This table is horribly out of date. I’ve changed the stats with a new source in the lead but the table doesn’t reflect the most recent definitions yet.l, mostly because the table is confusing and hard to update. The St Louis CSA has a new County, I tried to add:

|rowspan=2|Centralia, IL μSA
|rowspan=2 align=right|38,140
|Marion County, Illinois
|align=right|38,140

But can’t quite get it right. Anybody know how these work? Grey Wanderer (talk) 06:58, 4 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Nevermind, figured it out. Grey Wanderer (talk) 07:13, 4 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
