Restored content[edit]

I restored a brief, sourced statement about the current uprising status of the town, removed by Zvezdara Forest as "political propaganda". The statement seems quite neutral to me, and most people coming to the page are probably coming to learn more about the uprising. Recommend that people modify the statement to make it accurate or up-to-date when needed, rather then pretending the existence of any uprising is propaganda. move to Misrata[edit]

Misurata → Misrata —Given that this city has been in the news quite a bit under the form Misrata, shouldn't we move it there?

Likewise

Misurata District → Misrata District
Misurata Airport → Misrata Airport
Misurata Province → Misrata Province

Commented out text at end of article[edit]

Three paragraphs of text are commented out at the end of the article with the following note: "The following paragraphs are written in very poor English, most of the important information they include is already there in the summarized version above." To-Do list[edit]

This is for anyone interested in improving the article:

  • More info, if possible, on Misrata's pre-Ottoman history. There's a big gap between the first Islamic arrival and Ottoman rule.
  • Needs a Demographics section
    • Table/Chart showing Misrata's population past and present
    • Any info on the demographic makeup: ethnic, religious groups (including Jews, Italians, Turks, or others who used to live here)
  • Expand and reference Geography section
  • New section or subsection on the city's districts, neighborhoods, Old City, layout, etc.
  • Expansion of Transportation section
  • Needs Culture section: Traditions, Folklore, Landmarks, Cultural centers, Arts (film, media, publishing if any), Sports, particular festivals
  • Expand and reference Education section:
    • Some important details about the city's universities
    • How many regular schools exist, etc.
  • Needs a section on Local Government
    • Is there a municipal council and how many council seats if any?
    • Who's the mayor/governor?
    • Are officials elected or appointed?

Etymology[edit]

There has been an ongoing edit war regarding Misrata's etymology. I have reverted Cadenas2008's edits because they go against WP:Original research and they involved the deletion of an imperfect, but at least properly sourced explanation on the origins of Misrata's name. None of the sources Cadenas provided to prove that the name "Misrata" has Semitic origins even mentioned the city or Libya. They literally just mention what Cadenas seems (forgive my assumption) to personally believe are root words for Misrata like misrat, misrakh or misraq and their meanings in Hebrew, Phoenician, Ahmaric and so on. The current information in the article which had been deleted explains that Misrata was named after a Berber tribe named Misrata that was active in the region during the Classical and Islamic periods in Libya. While this may be an imperfect entry, the sources backing it deal with the subject directly and so, in the absence of other viable/sourced explanations, the current text should remain. Since it looks like there maybe disagreements on the issue, I ask editors to please discuss future additions here on the talk page. --Al Ameer son (talk) 15:56, 21 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The current name was added recently, there us no record of a Berber tribe called Misrata, except on the Islamist websites the Anon user posted. Denying Punic & Hebrew roots to the region is simplistic Antisemitism, the website he used is an Islamist website & there is no historic record of any Berber tribe named Misrata! Cadenas. Did you not read my above query? The entire passage you wrote is completely based on original research and therefore void of any relevance to the article. I also don't understand your insistence that "Islamist websites" were used to reference the original version. How are the following books Islamist websites: Encyclopaedic Ethnography of Middle-East and Central Asia: P-Z, Volume 1 by R. Khanam and Encyclopaedia of the World Muslims: Tribes, Castes and Communities by Nagendra Singh and Abdul Mabud Khan. I'm not even saying they're the best sources, but they're much more reliable and, more importantly in this case, relevant than your own (and my own) personal knowledge. It's also not a ridiculous claim that Berbers who dominated North Africa prior and during Muslim rule lived in the vicinity of Misrata at the time. Furthermore, the name "Misrata" doesn't even appear until well after early Arab rule (the Romans called it "Thubactis" and the Arabs "Thubaqt.") I'm going to restore the original version since you have absolutely no case. If you want to act immaturely by reverting the restoration and make further accusations of anti-semitism (very unwarranted) than I'll have to insist for an RfC to settle the matter. Why did you blank the section except for the first line? I can't comprehend your insistence on this issue and why, at the least, you won't participate in this discussion before removing sourced information. The part about the old Libyan-area tribe named "Misrata" was sourced to two references that would certainly qualify as reliable sources. The info you inserted is your own personal research. To repeat, none of the sources you brought forth mentioned Misrata or Libya. Now, it seems (and forgive my assumption) you blanked the section because you don't like it. If, as you stated in your edit summary, the information does not fit the topic of "etymology" then it should be moved to the History section and not deleted altogether. --Al Ameer son (talk) 03:35, 26 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Misurata → Misrata – WP:COMMONNAME and talk (Misrata is the spelling of the corresponding district article and in BBC News and elsewhere). Merger proposal[edit]

Mccapra, are you still pursuing this merge? Although the merge template can technically stay on forever, I think it's better to have that resolved ASAP. I have no opinion regarding the merge, but if the article were to be merged, I also suggest the target article to be Qasr Ahmad (where the Port of Misrata was mentioned) instead of the Misrata article you suggested.
