Diagram Needed[edit]

We need a diagram to go along with the pin assignments. There is a good one on the linked Apple KBase article, but its copyright belongs to Apple, so we can't use it. If anybody has one, please post.Joey Hagedorn 23:32, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Patent status?[edit]

Does Apple own a patent on MiniDVI, or what's the current legal status of the tech? There must be some reason why it's only seen on Apple hardware.

  • i dont know but looks like only apple can use mini-dvi, i was searching google pattent search and dont found anything with "mini-dvi" as name, i love how it looks in the new macs whit all thats tiny conections on a little space, dont understand why any PC have something similar or the same conection , it would be great

Clarification[edit]

What is the difference between these two:

- Apple Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter
- Apple Mini-DVI to VGA Display Adapter

(If none, why are they listed on the wiki page? If there is, maybe an explanation is needed.)

-- Also, this is confusing:

- Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter

What is a "Video" connection? Someone may have intended for this to be "Composite" video or similar. Clarification is needed. Jumpfroggy 07:23, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's composite video. Apple just calls it "video" in the product name. dcrosby

Which DVI?[edit]

  • Does mini-DVI support the full range of DVI signals (i.e., DVI-I, DVI-D, DVI-A, single and dual link), or just a subset? Jun-Dai 13:51, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, it appears to DVI-D. I appear to have part number M9321G/B here. Interestingly, while the part has a DVI-D (digital only but dual link) connector the DVI connector diagram shown on back of the the package appears to be a DVI-I (single link). The apple store website does NOT specify that the product is a DVI-D connector. 207.112.95.199 16:20, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Where can I buy mini-dvi or mini-vga?[edit]

I am working on a product now. I like the small size of mini-dvi or mini-vga connectors. Anyone know which manufacturer are making this connectors? And if I have to pay and license or patent fee to use this connector? Donnychiu 03:41, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's designed and manufactures by Apple, Inc. Jecowa (talk) 20:41, 31 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Macbooks are not sold with the adapter[edit]

The page says that MacBooks are sold with an adapter but are not. Tell me and i can change. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.59.17.161 (talk) 11:51, 28 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Criticism section[edit]

Some of the points made in the criticism section do not seem to be against the mini-DVI itself, but against products using this connector.

  • complaint against some laptops - Some have complained that Apple laptops do not include an adapter which must be bought separately.
  • complaint against an adaptor - For people with a standard DVI port, it is less expensive to buy a standard and more compact DVI to VGA adapter than for the Mini-DVI.
  • complaint against an adaptor - The cords on the adapters have been known to wear out from bending causing poor video malfunctions such as no red channel appearing.

What you said is probably true, but even so, if a criticism is against the only implementation of a standard, wouldn't that apply to the standard as well?

I guess I mean that if it's practically impossible for a Mini-DVI connector to drive a certain type of monitor, or if there is a single source for those cables and they tend to cost a lot, isn't that a problem with the standard itself? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.215.2.148 (talk) 03:54, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It seems like this section is a little biased. The standard itself is capable of more than the current (Apple branded) implementations, but there are other manufacturers (like Dynex.... http://www.dynexproducts.com/pc-584-9-dynex-mini-dvi-to-dvi-adapter.aspx) which actually manufacture a cable with DVI-I. Shouldn't complaints about Apple in particular be listed elsewhere? Like if there are enough complaints, what about a separate page for the Apple-branded cables? 65.27.153.167 (talk) 01:45, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

With respect to saying the adapter doesn't work w/ 2009 Mac Mini etc -- it would seem to make more contextual sense to state that those models do not drive the analog pins on their DVI ports (possibly with the adapter statement as an aside)146.180.106.231 (talk) 15:44, 12 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
