Untitled

Should this be at Milutin Milanković (where it is currently) or Milutin Milankovitch? Opinions? --Saforrest 21:27, 16 January 2006 (UTC)

-The simpler writing form has prevailed generally with these names now (perhaps unfortunately). The problem is that the official name for the minor planet (asteroid) is always Milankovitch! --VManiman 06:29, 22 Sept. 2006 (UTC)

Should it write that Milutin Milankovitch was Born in Dalj Croatia, former Austo-Hungarian Empire

I don't know, does it write that Genghis Khan was born in Russia, former Mongolian empire? 99.236.221.124 (talk) 19:44, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

Nationality error in lead

@Свифт and Shermanpalicad: Milanković's nationality is currently wrongly stated to be Serbian, instead of Yugoslav. Please note MOS:ETHNICITY, and read the lead section of nationality, so you could know the difference between nationality and ethnicity. Notrium (talk) 17:18, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

Milankovic was born in Austria Hungary, dissolved in 1918. New state: Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, Slovenes was created in 1918. In 1929 Kingdom of SHS was renamed Kingdom of Yugoslavia. (In 1945, communists abolished monarchy and created Socialist Yugoslavia.) He was not Austrian, Hungarian, or Yugoslavian. He was Serb. (I was born in Poland because my parents worked there, but I'm not Polish.) If you don't understand the difference, go to Franjo Tudjman Page. He was born in Kingdom of SHS, he was not a "SHS", or Yugoslav, but Croatian. Nikola Tesla was born in Austria Hungary, but Serbian (not Austrian, Hungarian, or Croat). The history of the Balkans is very complex, people are very sensitive about their ethnicity, religion, etc. Shermanpalicad (talk) 18:19, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

@Sadko: per WP:ONUS, you too must engage the discussion, instead of just reverting me. Also, because you seem to be advocating dismissing MOS:BIO, you should give some clear arguments for that.

For your convenience, here are the facts about Milanković (which can't all be put into the lead paragraph): Milanković was born in 1879 in Dalj in Austria-Hungary (now in Croatia). He went to school in Osijek (also in Austria-Hungary then, and now in Croatia). He became famous already while working in Vienna from 1896 to 1909. He worked in Serbia only from 1909 to 1914. He then worked in Budapest from 1914 to 1919. Thereafter (Serbia didn't exist anymore) it seems he worked solely in Yugoslavia until his death in 1958.

From the previous it is clear that it would make just as much or more sense to call him Austrian or Hungarian than Serbian. (I advocate for Yugoslav, in case that's not clear.)

Here's also a relevant quote from MOS:ETHNICITY: "previous nationalities or the place of birth should not be mentioned in the lead unless they are relevant to the subject's notability". Notrium (talk) 18:07, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

It's notable as his work in Serbia was of importance to the country's growing needs/development, and it gave solid ground for Milankovic to become a professor at Belgrade uni. He was also a Serb patriot, which can be found in his correspondence. Busy at the moment, and I can't go to the library to get books for my claims. He can be Serbian and Yugoslav for all I care, or just "scientist". Considering that another editor engaged in the discussion is supportive of the current version, I can say that we are currently not going anywhere with this. ty, Sadkσ (talk is cheap) 22:14, 1 July 2020 (UTC)
@Sadko: AFAIK Milanković only came to Serbia after being offered the chair of applied mathematics at Belgrade Uni.
Anyway, if he was a Serb patriot, by all means, put that in the article, and maybe the lead section, too, but that does not have much to do with his nationality.
And the "argumentum at another editor" does not hold water, especially if the editor in question is not even capable of following wiki links to educate themselves about policy/guidelines before commenting. Notrium (talk) 21:37, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

I don't think that MOS:ETHNICITY is particularly helpful here as whether "Yugoslav" is an ethnicity is an open question. Note that even putting that aside, you'd have to have sources which show that he self-identified as a "Yugoslav". Volunteer Marek 08:09, 4 July 2020 (UTC)

I agree and since every source shows that he was a Serbian sceintist like this one's : https://pantheon.world/profile/person/Milutin_Milanković/ , https://www.britannica.com/biography/Milutin-Milankovitch , http://www.mi.sanu.ac.rs/History/milankovic.htm and so on .. and also according to this source he was also a vice president of SANU (Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts) :https://www.danas.rs/drustvo/milutin-milankovic-nije-hrvatski-naucnik/ - I think that it is necessary to reach a consensus before changing anything
pantheon is just a copy of this Wikipedia article, but Britannica, an independent reliable source, does certainly describe him as “Serbian”. Volunteer Marek 08:50, 4 July 2020 (UTC)
@Volunteer Marek: please. Why did you come here and "join" the dispute if you weren't even going to inform yourself on the most basic issues at hand (wikilinks above)? It is simply disruptive to come to a certain discussion and comment right away before even reading the opening paragraph (you clearly haven't read the second sentence, where I urge the reader to inform themselves on the difference between nationality and ethnicity).
