Misplaced talk content[edit]

The information about O'Connell in his entry in the Australian Dictionary of Biography conflicts with Edquist's book in some places, and makes some unverifiable statements:

  • Tpsoconnell is not aware of any evidence that Michael was a descendant of Daniel O'Connell.
  • He did not start to train as a priest at Ushaw College. It was a Roman Catholic seminary, but at that time it took lay boys.[1]
  • Edquist says that the bushfire which destroyed Barbizon happened in 1944.[2]
  • In 1929 he went to Europe on his own, not with Ella.[3]
  • It is doubtful that he saw the name 'Mael' as recognising Ella's contribution to the work.[4]
  • He and Ella did not separate shortly after the birth of their son Terence in 1943. Ella and Terence did not live at The Chase after 1950, but they did stay in touch with him, often spent weekends at The Chase, and occasionally went on holiday with him.[5][6]
