Joe Whyte[edit]

It should probably be mentioned somewhere that Joe Whyte only voices him in spin-off material. A source with some relevant info[edit]

FYI - I came across this article [1] ("Talking Head: Syracusan Tom Kenny voices America's most popular cartoon characters" by Bill DeLapp Syracuse News Times) while working on the SpongeBob SquarePants page. There's a nice anecdote about Ernest Borgnine giving his autograph to a star struck Tom Kenny, as well as some info about how Borgnine approached voice acting. While I don't really have the time to do anything with this right now, someone who's more involved here might want to tackle it. Infobox bloat[edit]

In this edit I removed excessive detail from the infobox. If this information is important, then it should be presented in prose in the article's body, not crammed into the infobox where it becomes a ponderous mess. @Cyphoidbomb: Seems reasonable enough to me - considering that no one has replaced Borgnine, do you think that we should also remove the (1999-2012) next to his name? Having that seems to indicate that Whyte and Alaskey took over the role on the actual show after Borgnine's death, rather than having simply voiced the character in various video games. --Jpcase (talk) 16:12, 26 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Jpcase: Thanks for the reply. It should probably be removed. It's just clutter. The infobox should be simple. I'll note also that this IP editor restored the content thinking that the change was vandalism. Or maybe they just restored an earlier version. I don't know. But the bottom line is if you look at this version of the infobox, your eyes will roll back in your head once you hit that |voices= parameter. @Cyphoidbomb: Great. I've taken it out. What would you think about having a simple (video games) next to Whyte and Alaskey's names in the infobox though? I agree with your decision to cut down the clutter, but it may still be useful to note that these two voice actors never played the role in the actual show. As for the IP editor, I think he/she may have been meaning to revert this [2] actual vandalism that had been added by a separate editor, immediately before your own edit, and accidentally reverted you as well. P.S. I didn't actually get your ping, since the feature only works when a signature is added in the exact same edit. Proposed refocusing/rewrite[edit]

I hope to reformat this page to focus on the season one episode of the same name. The current article is very bare-bones with only two sections. It's unlikely that there will ever be more to add, since the characters only appeared in 15 out of 385+ episode segments and were retired in 2012. It's mostly plot summary (Role in SpongeBob SquarePants) and a description of how/why Borgnine and Conway worked on their first episode (Development/Voice). The only content that doesn't relate to the season one episode is the beginning of the Development section (story of Hillenburg's career), but it is completely out of place and doesn't even mention Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy. However, I have been able to find sources that discuss the production and reception of their debut episode better. I hope to make the changes sometime in the next week, so if anyone has opinions/thoughts about the page, add them here. --NickSpark (talk) 20:12, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Creating a separate article for the episode is fine, so long as there's sufficient sourceable information to include. But I wouldn't want to see it replace the current article that exists for the characters. I'm not sure that anyone has ever put a serious effort into developing this article - I agree that what we have at the moment is bare-bones, but there are definitely sources out there that could remedy that. See the one that I linked to a couple sections above for a start. I'm sure that plenty more sources would turn up, so long as someone is willing to put in enough time to look for them. It might require more than a simple Google search though - HighBeam, Newslibrary.com, and The Way Back Machine would all be useful. --Jpcase (talk) 21:20, 24 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Aquaman[edit]

Hmm, the design of Mermaid Man is obviously based of Aquaman. I don't know if that constitues fluff, and would require a source, though. (Barnacle Boy is less obvious, but I guess he has some traits of Robin, aong others. 惑乱 Wakuran (talk) 13:31, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
