Armored v. Mechanized Warfare

I would argue that "armored warfare" is a type of "mechanized warfare" or a refinement and not the other way around. The salient aspect of "mechanized warfare" is the use of mechanical, automotive conveyance in executing warfare. Armored vehicles are a type of mechanical conveyance, but non-armored conveyance can also be used in warfare and it's still considered mechanized warfare. Example: the use of taxi cabs to move troops during the First Battle of the Marne(1914), World War I. The taxi cabs were definitely non-armored, but a mechanical conveyance was used to execute warfare and therefore can be considered mechanized warfare.RCKamahele 07:58, 27 February 2006 (UTC)RCKamahele

I'm not sure your definitions are precisely correct. Strictly speaking, I think motorized troops use truck transport; mechanized troops use AFVs.

On the other hand, I believe these both are aspects of the mechanization of warfare, in the general sense, and I agree that the articles should be merged. —Michael Z. 2006-02-28 01:33 Z

Thanks for engaging in a discussion! I concede that mechanized troops move across the battlefield in infantry fighting vehicles which are armored. My concern is that discussion of non-armored formations in an article about "Armored Warfare" would be confusing to the reader. Indeed, motorized troops are formations of infantry mounted on trucks, but they are not armored. They enjoy the benefit of mobility on the battlefield, but not the benefits of armor protection. Yet, such non-armored formations take part in mobile warfare. So, I now propose that motorized formations be discussed under a different subject called Mobile Warfare. Okay, I just looked up Mechanized Infantry and found that trucks is included in the definition. And at least the concepts of mobile warfare can be found at Maneuver warfare. So, I remove any objections to merging the articles.RCKamahele 04:13, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

Sri; Mechanized Infantry says trucks are used by Motorized, while Mech uses APC/AFV (some level of armor protection). Bridesmill 15:21, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

At some point there may be enough material here (or in "armoured warfare") to warrant a separate article about motorized as opposed to mechanized warfare.
